I was just about to press the trigger on a nice new 23" Samsung. Moments before I actually put the order in, an old friend randomly started speaking to me on Steam about how good his new monitor is - The 22" 120 hz Viewsonic. What he has said, and what I have read since, has made me wonder if I would be better off going for a slightly smaller 120 hz display, so am after some feedback.

Is the difference really that noticeable? Is it worth it?

I just cant imagine it being that different, but from what he was saying and what I have since read on random websites.. Apparently, for some people, it is.

If you can, try out a CRT at 120Hz, if you can tell the difference then I imagine you'll want a 120Hz screen. :)

So me a CRT at 120Hz looks smoother than my 60Hz LCD, but I don't do much gaming so I'll put up with the compromise that 60Hz.

It depends what you use it for and how good your system is.

If you want it for fast action gaming it makes a huge difference as you can get 2x the fps of a normal monitor.

If you mainly browse the web, play chess etc you wont notice much.

I do use it a lot for gaming, but am I right in thinking that I would need to be achieving over 60fps to see the difference?

My rig isnt the best - Q6600, 4GB Ram, 5770 HD. I dont imagine im going to be pushing 60fps on new releases anyhow?

I think its only useful if your a hardcore fps gamer in games like quake. Even if your a casual battlefield player or something then its probably just wasting money.

I think it's definately worth it if you play any fast paced FPS games... i've been using my viewsonic one for a number of months now and there is no way I can move back to using my previous monitor...

Same, I've just made the move over yesterday. For me playing old fast paced twitch shooters like css it makes a big difference.

Well, cheers guys - 120 hz it is :D

Now, the samsung or the viewsonic.. Im iclined to go with the Samsung, just as Ive always been more than happy with them in the past and it will look semi decent next to my existing 19" one.. hmm..

Yea im looking at getting 120hz screen as well, for gaming i think its worth it. Just a quick question though, is anyone using an ATI card with a 120hz screen? as there are meant to be some issues there..... and would appreciate someone who actually has an Ati card giving some feedback, thanks

Big issue with 120hz displays and ATI cards (5*** series at least). Essentially: avoid!

I posted here in gfx and monitor sections hoping to warn everyone. Thread on official ATI forum about it.

It's only worth it if you're card can output at above 60 FPS constantly at that resolution with your settings. Otherwise you have a very expensive monitor which will look exactly the same as your old one.

STRONGLY recommend running benches on games you play before buying it to see if you get above the magical 60 FPS.

Couldn't agree more with this...

Stupid 5870 !!! brilliant card...pretty quiet too! more than 85hz? never gonna happen

don't think you need more than 60fps for it to still look smoother when panning cameras in RTS's or moving quickly in FPS
