Hey guys

I've been hanging around here for a few years and use the site but only just signed up to the forums.

Basically I would really appreciate some advice. I'm computer literate, however the extent of my hardware knowledge is changing out RAM and HDDs [the old IDE ones with the jumpers :S] So I think its about time I started to make my own pc rather than getting a built one. I'm also interested in doing a bit of overclocking, nothing extreme cos i need reliability.

I'm looking for something that will do well in rendering tasks mainly with V-ray therefore cpu and ram is important, graphics editing, and autocad. It will also be used for gaming so a pretty decent graphics setup to power a 24" WS [1920x1200].

This is a quick prelimary list I have made:

Please let me know if there is something blindingly wrong such as the graphics card won't fit or similar =D

At the moment I'm not definate about the mobo, gpu and case so any suggestions are welcome. I know ati have some new stuff coming out at some point. I have heard the Q6600 is great and can be easily overclocked so i'm going with that.

Anyhow any help is much appreciated and i'll probably be sticking around a bit.

Regards

Danny

id probably save some cash by swapping that psu out for a corsair hx620.
doubt you even need the 620 corsair even if you run 2 of those 3870x2's.

Looks pretty good to me. But I'd go with a 8800 GT/GTS these will perform as well as the 3870 but cost a lot less. Plus you don't really need 1000W PSU. 600W would be more than enough. I'd also go for a better cpu cooler. Something like the tuniq tower, or the theralright extreme. this would give you more head room when overclocking your cpu.

This'll give you the same or better performance for 250 quid less. With this you could add another X2 if you wanted to. I would have included it in this spec but I don't think CorssFireX is working properly just yet.

I will make another and spend the same as you did.

I'd go ballistix/tracer over the Geil as that Geil is only C5, whereas the Ballistix/tracer is C4, so should overclock much higher.
Not really. At 1:1 FSB:DRAM with a Q6600 he'll probably never even run the RAM at its rated frequency, let alone have it overclocked much higher.

both of billy's specs look good.

How long can you wait before spending all your money on a computer as the new Quads are being released next month and should be a bit less then the pre-order and also the new 9 series Nvidia cards are due next month.

May be worth waiting if you can.

you don't have to run ram at 1:1, i'm running fsb at 432. @ 6:5 to give a ram speed of 1037Mhz. Instead of 864 @ 1:1. For pretty much the same price i know which i'd prefer.

ways performance could be improved from this: one of the yorkfield processors (although the prices for them are insane ATM), faster RAM (although the RAM on there ATM is fine), a second HD3870 X2 (not sure what the drivers are like for using 2 of them though, and if that PSU would handle it? not sure what the power usage is like on the hd3870 x2's), maybe a second hard drive for raid 0?

i will definately consider waiting smyth, maybe upto 2 months if needs be.

thanks for the replies everyone, and so fast too ^^

i'm going look at these and consider them. i'm sure i'll be back with some questions

personally which ram isn't not a huge issue for me, i'm more concerned that i can put in better ram when the price comes down without needing to change the mobo

Agree about waiting for the new quads if you are willing to do so. There is a saying in the industry that "it's never a bad time to buy, something faster will always be around the corner" but when dropping well over a grand on a system I think it is worth holding back for the new breakthrough kit i.e. Yorkfield.

Personally I wouldn't be blowing £200 on 4 sticks of RAM, 2*2GB should give you better overclocking (and upgrade) potential and there are good cheap alternatives anyway. Should be able to get some PC8000C5 or PC6400C4 for less than half that.

Got to say thanks again for all the feedback.

I agree on the RAM now HangTime, I realise I can get some better deals and save a lot of money by picking different RAM ~100 quids would be great. I'm also now considering waiting around for the yorkfields, of course when you wait there's always something new on the horizon ;D

I notice you all chose the P182 case, just curious as to why, is it a really good case that you would highly recommend?

BillytheImpaler thank you very much for you input, just wanted to ask one thing, I notice in the second list you go for a gtx sli, would you recommend this setup over the ati card?

Also any opinions on whether you guys would still go for the p35 mobo over the newer x38 or even the x48?

If your waiting for the yorkfields, it may be worth waiting just a little longer for the new 9 series nvidia cards. Not sure when they're due for release, but definitely worth looking in to.

yeah its all very hush around the 9 series release, i haven't found anything definitive. I would consider it dependent upon price, even so I guess its release might bring some 8800 prices down.
