120hz vs 60hz

I currently run on a 24 inch 60hz monitor it is great however it does seem to lag randomly when loadsa **** is going down i.e while playing counter strike source is is limited in a huge gun fight with smokes and flashes. The 120hz seems dear nearly £300 and only 1920 by 1080 but the pros are smooth gaming

If its lagging when lots is going on then either your video card or CPU isn't upto it or you have something running in the background hogging CPU.

Q6600 @ 3.6ghz and an ATI 4870 1gb :O

That is not an issue with your monitor at all, as Rroff pointed out the main culprits would be CPU or GPU. You should monitor them both when gaming and see what it is that bottlenecks when your fps drops like that.
