125cc recommendation

Yeah, the only ones I've seen go bang are the ones that haven't been cared for. I had an RS50 for 18 months that never skipped a beat neither have a handful of 125's that belonged to my friends because we kept them well maintained at a very reasonable cost.

What I'm trying to say to the OP is not to be put off by scare stories of 2strokes going bang all the time for no reason. Just like any sort of machinery, if you look after them properly they'll be fine and these bikes are also not very expensive to maintain.

I don't remember saying they went bang all the time :/

I said they need more maintenance than a 4 stroke, and if you want to be casual about it, they're not the one you want.

Thank you for all your posts, they're very informative, however I picked up a 125 today (chinese import thingamabob), i'll get up a few pictures tomororw. Had brilliant fun riding it down the A22 in the dark from e.grinstead to lewes then over to brighton :)

Today has been the longest it has ever taken to go to the supermarket. I head forth to the marina asda, taking a detour along the seafront for a few miles as it was a beautiful morning and I wanted to enjoy it on my new bike, everything is calm, no problems. I head back towards the marina to park up and pick up some eggs, bacon, the manly things that are needed in a breakfast (oh, and some milk for my coco pops). I'm cruising along nice and slowly in the car park, change gear and the throttle is doing bugger all, that's when a passer-by get's my attention and says "Your chains fallen off".

After one day you can imagine I am not happy, and panicking quite a bit as this is my first vehicle on the road, so I park the bike up and walk briskly home as I had remembered that my insurance comes with breakdown cover. Calling around a few places I finally locate a place which will take a look at it, the others gave responses of "No we don't touch them imports with a barge pole!".

After much worrying about wether or not this place will have a chain to match, and a couple of hours later, I get my bike picked up by a nice chap who assures me they will be able to get it fixed, even though i'm thinking 'i'll believe when I see it'.
Get to the bike shop (On the Wheel in brighton) and they measure up the old chain with one they have in stock, sure enough it seems to be a match, and looks to be a heavier duty too. Now I just wait for the phone call for them to tell me it's ready to pick up... or if it needs anything else doing to it.

And, i'm still without my eggs or bacon.

Yes, though i'm not sure how long ago, it's sod's law that I was going to take it to my friends house so we could look over it in more depth this afternoon. The breakdown man reccomended that I lube it once a week, an expensive lesson for me, well £18+labour.

In over 25 years of riding bikes ive never seen a chain brake very lucky the chain did not wrap itself around some ones neck :D

I was pillion many years back when one came off and nearly hit a m8 riding behind us in the head but that was a dogey link but most chains now are link less.

edit: When i say link less what i mean is you still have a link as such and bur the pins over to secure the link but years back the links were like a push bike links with a clip err if you follow my drift.

I would recommend something like a Honda XR125. Though riding style is entirely down to personal preference, I do agree that bikes of capable speeds which do not necessitate the benefits of aerodynamic fairings and streamlined riding position do look silly.

There are also particular benefits to owning an off-road capable bike. :)

4 Stroke engines in 125cc bikes make me cry, slow.. slow slow.. no power urghh

Totally disagree. The benefits of deliverable power throughout the gear is a welcome break from having to keep the bike on the boil constantly.

You gotta watch out for those cheap chinese ones. :o

Yeah now I realise the outcome from owning one... i'm just thankful it won't be for that long, and the chain on it now is a lot stonger, got full whack out of it on a short trip up to devils dyke and then down to shoreham and over the bypass. I must remember to go into the lowest gear at roundabouts and not stall...

I guess a good outcome of the problem this morning is if it happens again I know what to do.

£18 and no injuries is a cheap lesson learnt, but I am surpised - I've never known a chain come off a motorbike. What bike is it? The only cheapy-import I've seen was a skyjet 125, looked ok but then I didn't pay much attention to it. Hope it's serving you well anyway.

My 125^
Totally recommend, very easy to ride, decent power for commuting and a little fun.
Will do 70 fine, 80/90 is downhill or wind behind you!
Brakes are very sharp which is great
MPG Is about 110 :)
