Hi all,

I'm currently running the OCUK 920 D0 4.0ghz i7 bundle (Gigabyte not the RampageII).

Is it possible/feasible to get 12GB of Patriot Viper RAM running in this bundle? I've heard it's really hard to get 12GB to work stably with such a huge overclock.

I have zero overclocking experience (hence buying it done for me by ocuk).

Reason I ask is that my work often demands a lot of ram (3d rendering) and I'm already peaking at 6GB and some scenes need more.

Cheers,

6 sticks of RAM places twice the load on the uncore of the i7 (memory controller, l3 cache, and and QPI link), this means more power and more heat. This will limit the overclocking potential of the i7 as it will hit it TDP limit. I wouldn't have thought an i7 920 will do 4GHz with 12G (I know of one person who struggles to get over ~3.4GHz with 12G).

When the 4G DDR3 modules become more available and at a sensible price, you might be able to use 3 4G modules.

Just tweaking 4.3ghz as it fails blend after about 7 hours at the moment

But Pauly running large amounts of memory is what your mobo is made for :)

Yep it loves it :D

Testing 4.4ghz and getting that stable at the moment :D

Can't really help on the UD5 but should be a case of just needing slightly higher QPI/VTT voltage to stabilise it

Given the memory controller is onbaord the CPU, I'd have thought that getting a decent overclock with 12G of RAM would be more dependant on having a lucky CPU rather than the motherboard. I notice you had to up the memory voltage a touch to get it working, this I've been lead to believe significantly increases CPU temps, but you're using water I see so maybe not an issue for you.
