Im considering an upgrade to 12gb of ram in my 17 rig, been looking at theese two kits.

Im currently running 6gb of ocz reaper c7 @1600mhz , have it at 8-8-8-27 2T 1.66v. I notice that the corsair is rated at 1.5v and the kingston 1.65v, ive had my reapers at 9-9-9-27 before. Could i just set my current ram to the same timings as the kingston kit, save in bios and proceed to install the 12gb kit, therefore not having to mess about with my overclock settings? Thanks in advance.

I just added the 12gb kingston to my 6gb ocz and it seems to be running ok; but i dont mess with ram timings, only OC i do is upping the BLCK..i7 920 from 133 to 166.

I wont be running the ocz's along with the new kit, either sell them or keep as spares.

To be honest, I would be more inclined to run the new set on Auto settings to start with.

check that everything is still stable with the CPU OC and then clock up the RAM :(

IMO

Yep, i suppose you have a good point. Im not sure if running 12gb in a 3 x 4 dimm setup places anymore strain on the imc, as opposed to running 3 x 2gb.

Running with more memory will put a bigger strain on the IMC as it has more memory to address. Hence why most overclockers going for records will run with the lowest amount possible (obviously depending on benchmark).

3x4gb will put more strain on IMC than 3x2GB. 3x2gb will put more strain than 3x1GB. 6x2GB will put more strain than 3x4GB as you are running two sets of triple channel and thus 6x4gb will be higher still.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers w3bbo, ive seen a few users on various forums reporting issues with oc's when all banks are filled.

Yup. Massive strain on IMC will do that. QPI voltage needs to be increased to give the IMC more stability which in turn increases temps thus decreasing stability. It can sometimes be off set by reducing CPU pll from 1.8v (I ran mine 24/7 at 1.5v) but some CPU's won't like it.

Some CPU's have a great IMC and will happily run with 6 dimms with little/no voltage boost needed, others are not so great.
