13 plate motors

Nope, a private plate costs from £250ish and most new cars are purchased on finance.

So what if they're purchased on finance? Someone with a poor credit history and a low income is not going to be able to buy a brand new car on finance easily. £250 is still a lot of money to blow on a numberplate when a lot of people, regardless of income, are struggling to maintain their relative standard of living.

What are you talking about low income families for, before you talked about those well off, and classified them as such because they didn't waste money on things like private plates.

Private plates are cheap, and i used finance to illustrate the point that you don't need mountains of cash to buy a 13 plate car, you could drive out of many a showroom with a new car for as little as 6 - 9k financed.

I personally think spending £250 on a numberplate is a colossal waste of money but then again I accept that there are other people who disagree with me.

I seem to be missing the point of your argument here. Why would someone on the bones of their arse even be trying to buy a brand new car? Surely having many thousands of pounds of finance to pay off at some horrendous interest rate is going to be a rather greater obstacle to such people buying a new car than the cost of a private plate?

Don't get me wrong; I think private plates are an utter waste of money, but I don't understand your argument. Pandering to the vain and insecure is a very profitable business though.

On the other hand 13 plates could be very popular on the grounds that 13 makes a very plausible "B" so there'll be a good selection of words and names available to those who are so inclined.

My point was very few people can or choose to just go out and hand £30,000 over to a dealer for a brand new car. Most people with a decent income will buy a brand new car on finance.

Buying a car on finance doesn't mean you're poor, which is what the guy was suggesting in response to my original comment. On another note, my original comment was tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be taken literally.

Erm, no it wasn't.

A lot of the people who are well off enough to afford a 13 plate car are well off enough because they don't waste their money on crap like private plates.

Which is tosh, that's why I informed you most new cars are financed, you don't need loads of cash in the bank to buy a new car, which has been the situation for a very long time.

As far as I'm concerned you still have to be well off to finance a brand new car.

I agree, very few people actually pay the whole sum up front. It is doubtful even someone earning £100,000/year would be able to afford to just hand over £20,000 of their disposable income to a dealer.

Also as I said my comment wasn't to be taken literally, it was just taking the mick out of private plates.

I can see why lots don't see any value in private plates.

Yes there are some plates that are an investment but the calibre of plates you get for £250 are unlikely to suddenly be worth 100 times that value in a few years time.

Also, lets be honest, a lot of people don't buy a private plate as an investment. It's a trade founded on vanity and gullibility. I'm sure if the DVLA suddenly started charging people £1000 to have special luminous blue number plates, people would still pay the sum and have them for the very same reason!

My plate was £250 and spells my nickname so I was happy to pay that. I'll now have that for life, on any car I wish. £250 was also nothing compared to the actual cost of the cars it's been on and the money they've cost.

To me it's like putting nicer alloys on your car, except you get to put those nice alloys on any car you ever own. It just finishes off the car for me and makes it look a bit nicer.

It also hides the age which I like (despite my car being relatively new).

Do people like you park in supermarket carparks, multi storey's etc? The reason i ask is my cars are usually 'nice' (not to your league) and i am always twitchy when parking in such places!

People like me

Personally in supermarket car parks I park at the back / far away from the store where I can easily get a space with no one either side. Simply because I want to avoid some old bint reversing out and taking the side of my car with it, or someone hitting it with a trolley.

Not much you can do about multi story car parks as they are often packed, but I aim for a decent space if there is more than 1.

I rarely find myself driving somewhere where I don't know the best place to park though.

No you don't. You just need to be well off to get a 'good' finance deal.

but the calibre of plates you get for £250 are unlikely to suddenly be worth 100 times that value in a few years time.

Mine was £250 and I'm sure it's worth at least £251 now. I doubt anyone buys private plates expecting them to be worth 100 times more.

It's a trade founded on vanity and gullibility.

Gullibility? How about individuality? Don't tell me that people who pay to be individual are simply vain and gullible? Sounds like you would prefer if we all looked the same, drove the same cars and had the same opinion
