£1300 Budget Plasma/LCD help...

as for the plamsa v LCD debate

LCDs by nature tend to show up more of the noise in low quality SD broadcasts, like BBC1 on digital for example, the sort of stuff you watch everyday

so if you watch more normal TV, plasma would probably be better

the old debate about contrast ratios and blacks is now all but pointless as LCDs have caught up so much.

and for this money id be looking at the current best of 37 inch plasmas, the Panasonic 37inch PX60, can be had for £1200 on-line so well within budge

just about every review ive read of the above TV has placed it number one, its only when you get to 43inch, that you can find better in the pioneer, but they are expensive, starting at well over 2 grand.

Been pointed in the direction of this screen any thoughts on this choice?

Panasonic Charcoal TH42PWD8BK

I wouldn't throw a 1000pound at a screen with only 852x480res in this day and age...With HD TV & DVD taking off...

Even if you are not looking at getting an HD skybox or by telewest cable or xbox360 or HD/blue-ray player now..
In 6 months or a year or so time that may change,,and then you be wanting to have to change this low res plasma again.

If you can push to £1500 go for the Optoma HD72i front projector.. It rocks big time. You can get it for this price with free ceiling mount and free 92" screen..

I havent got SKY HD yet but I do have SKY+ and the World cup coverage on BBC looks very very very good..

Resolution does not equal picture quality.

I think the PW8D will look better with sd than anything you can hang on a wall at this price.

I get the impression that some people dont think that it will display HD, It will (with the right board) and it would look great, arguably better than most entry level HD ready tvs around this price. The scaler in the pan does a good job, especially with 720p.

If the buget was a bit more I would suggest the PH8D.

Make a short list(with or without the PW8D :) ) and compare them side by side, preferably with the kind of feed you will be using.

The Hitachi 7200 is another I would shortlist if the HD ready thing puts you off.

Dont really want a projector due to the fact "The Mrs" does not like them lol.

Neither did my missus until she saw it in action.. Beats any LCD or Plasma hands down. Just pop over to Avforums for more info and they will tell you the same.

She now loves.. especialy now she can watch Diagnosis murder on a massive screen.. Dick Van Dyke never looked so good:p

Ok what would be the minimum res to look for in taking into account my budget.

I don't think you get a better TV than a Panasonic 37PX60 or 42PX60 for your money..

You should be able to get the 37px60 for around £1200/£1300

And the 42px60 for around £1400/£1500

These prices may even be less now if you look around..

have a look here
http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=82

For pricing round..you got to be careful on if it comes with a table top stand or Cabinet Stand.

The problem with pj's is that for day to day viewing I would choose a lcd or plasma. For movies and watching footy yep pj everytime. The lamps don't last long enough for everyday viewing ( I've got kids and the tv is on at least 8-10 hours a day which for a typical pj means a new bulb every year - ouch) and they are not the cheapest things to buy. Don't think for a minute I'm being negative about pj's I'm not, I am currently trying to decide on either the Infocus Screenplay IN76 or Optoma Themescene HD72i to compliment the Plasma (I just want a bigger screen)
