Currently looking around for a replacement laptop for the folks.
It'll be 15" and £700-£800 to spend. Have seen some absolutely fantastic looking laptops in this price range, with great specs to match.

There is one thing that ruins everything however. 1366x768 resolution screens...
They are everywhere, like a cancer infecting a large majority of laptops.
My £350 CoreDuo cheapo laptop from 6-7 years ago had a higher screen resolution than this... Why is it the case that laptops above £700 in 2012 are still using god awful screen resolutions?

Does anyone have any suggestions for 15" laptops that might use something a little better?

It's the dilema I'm facing trying to chose a new laptop. My ageing XPS M1530 has a 1280x800 resolution and I've had this thing 5/6years now so I'm just as baffled as you really!

The only problem I see with 1080p screens is when gaming you will almost certainly have to use a lower resolution which can look a bit ropey.

They do look nice. :) (XPS15z)
Any news on Dell moving these laptops to Ivy Bridge CPUs?

This one wouldn't be a problem for what this laptop would be used for, but it would be something to consider if gaming was a must!

Mine is fine for 75% of what I play on it, for the rest I run at 720p with no real problems with pixellation.

My 525m seems to clock quite well too ;)

Yeah I guess it won't be a problem for your folks. In that case surely a 17" screen laptop which are almost always 1080p would be the sensible choice?

I suggested this, but they never liked using my old 17" laptop, thought it was a little big.
On the same front, 13" was deemed too small...

There are a ridiculous amount of model varieties out there when looking online. Bit of a minefield but I'm sure there are some real gems to find.

It's a bit of an insult to think that consumers don't care that they're sticking cheap screens in laptops, especially those approaching £1k. We're now seeing phones with similar resolutions as your average 15" laptop screen.. all in a 4" screen!

I understand that it'd be impossible/very expensive to produce a laptop with the same DPI as an iphone 4 or SGSIII but it's not unreasonable to expect 1080p.

I'm buting a 13-14 inch laptop at the start of July and i do not want a 1366*768 screen.

Ok so after doing more searching online I have seen a laptop called the Genesis IV which is (as far as I can see) it's a Clevo chasis. You can spec this with a 1080p screen and upgrade to a basic i3 for £486 which seems like cracking value!

Read up on the company and they seem legit with plenty of people praising their customer services.

Totally agree, I am also looking for a better resolution in a laptop screen. Another option for better resolutions is to look at the Sony Viao's. They do a 15.5" at 1920x1080.

1080p is pretty standard for 15" screen at that price, I would definitly go the custom route which you are looking at with Clevo stuff, you get much more for your money

Kinda on topic,

Has anyone got any experience with the Clevo 15 inch notebooks? There is no denying they are excellent spec for the money (Ivybridge, 650m, 1080p for under £800) but I am unsure about the brand.

How is the build quality?

I always preferred 1280x800 myself anyway. All 1366x768 has done is make laptops wider, which then means many manufacturers cram in a numpad to fill some space. Terrible.

I had a Dell 15" laptop with a 1366x768 resolution screen and hated it so I upgraded to a 1080p screen on a 17" Dell XPS L702x and it's fantastic!

I got mine off the Dell outlet (don't think this is classed as a competitor as there is a whole thread about it) and for a "certified refurb", it was fantastic quality - barely a mark on it - got mine for £700 and the new price on the Dell website was over £1300!! :D

If you get one with a decent GPU you don't even need to worry about lowering the resolution for gaming!

Hi mate, generall speaking the Clevo chasis represents a solid looking machine. After reading up on forums of a reseller in the UK no one has reported anything that has massively put me off. Only thing I've seen so far is some complaints about the enormous power brick which is sat at 750g and looks like an old xbox brick . However you would be massively hard pressed to beat the spec against price, even on the Dell outlet.

you'd think if clevo laptops were made more accessible to the public they would sale shed loads, found one place in uk you can custom build them but only for trade only customers.
