Hi, I'm looking to buy a little laptop for £550ish that I can install ubuntu on for word processing, internet, im, music + pictures etc. I haven't much clue about laptops so I don't really know where to begin.

Most important things are build quality, portability (14" or less hopefully) and of course price.. is this possible?? Thanks for any help! :D

P.S. are there competitor issues here? Sorry if there are.

HP/Compaq (one or the other) do a nice-looking 14.1" notebook. Not sure on pricing.

Otherwise, there's the Dell Inspiron 640m. I've got a 630m which is essentially the same thing (630m is Pentium-M, 640m is Core2Duo) and I've had absolutely no bother from it at all, and it's literally just over a year old now. Very nice, solid machine, and it's a nice size for the price. 15.4" would have been too big for my liking, and anything smaller (i.e. 13.3") seems to instantly double the price.

IBM laptops, made by Lenovo, are probably your best bet. IBM has committed itself to Linux support and many of their models are available from the factory with Linux installed. This means that you're likely to have all of your hardware supported without having to futz around installing drivers.
