1440P 21:9 Suggestions needed...

The OP did say about changing his mind and going for a 16. 9. But it was another poster smeaney who has said they are going for a Samsung.

@IvanDobskey, Yeah that is a cheap price for that monitor, was watching a video comparing it to a microboard m340clz, that seems an impressive buy.

Yep it was me who hijacked the thread...sorry! To confirm I bought the Samsung C34F791.

I will let everyone know my thoughts next week when I am setup.

Looking forward to tomorrow now. Also I am glad I bought yesterday and the price is back to £859 now!

£709 is a great price for this monitor.

In my opinion it's the best ultrawide around, other than it's lack of gysync.

Especially if you value decent blacks and no glow / backlight bleed.

Well, just got back from a local retailer who had one of the AOC panels on display, but no stock. It was running Rise of the Tomb rider in native 21:9 1440p, and looked pretty awesome. Unfortunately, the DP wasn't working so on the HDMI cable they had it was stuck at 50Hz with no Gsync. Still was decently smooth with it being powered by a 1080Ti.

Still, there was another 21:9 1440P next to it I was able to tinker with and play some 1440P youtube demos on, very nice, except that it was all filmed in 16:9 so I got a feel for the whole letterboxing effect. It was a little disconcerting.

I've also had a good read through the WSGF list for gaming compatibility. While many games will support 21:9 natively in engine, many, many games seem to have cut scenes in 16:9, and even more disconcertingly HUDs in 16:9 and weirdly games menus and map screens and the like. I recently finished ME: Andromeda, and thinking of the conversations that would have been squeezed... ugh. The final nail was seeing gears of War 4 on a 16:9 1440P IPS 144Hz Gsync monitor. Damn, was it nice. Not the desk-hogging, wrap into your vision that 21:9 offers but still hot damn did it look good.

So, unfortunately, I'm think I'm going for a 16:9 1440P for gaming, and just using my spare 24" 1080P for extra desk space. Really glad I took the time to see one in the flesh, now.

Soooooooooo, 16:9 1440P 144Mhz suggetions, please? :D :D
I'm a bit confused by this. I have a 21:9 monitor and granted some cut scenes are shown with in 16:9 but they aren't squeezed? There are just black bars at either side of the 16:9 video. Experiencing these cut scenes on a 21:9 monitor is exactly the same as on a 16:9 monitor so why would decide not to get a 21:9 monitor at all? In my opinion you are denying yourself the ultimate gaming experience - there aren't many who have tried gaming at 21:9 and not loved it or could go back to 16:9 but more importantly, your reason for dismissing it seems completely wrong to me. I genuinely believe you're making a mistake friend.

Edit: Just reading through your post again and see that perhaps you are referring to HUDs, menus, etc. when you mention 'squeezed' but again those issues are so few and far between that they are pretty insignificant. I game for 5+ hours every day on my monitor so have played I'm sure 100 or more games on it and the only game I had significant trouble with menus and like was Mass Effect 1 but I did find a solution using Flawless Widescreen. Generally, I've honestly rarely noticed when HUD scaling has been a bit off. All these little niggles that occasionally happen with the odd older game are far, far offset by the gaming experience you get at 3440x1440 resolution.
