Hi,

Just put together a new rig and need help on buying the GPU.

The monitor is the asus PB278Q.

I am torn between a gigabyte r9 290 (mon reference) and the EVGA 780 classified. Or if you recommend anything else under £500 without wasting money!

I play mainly FPS games and arma 3.

If you need any other details please ask. I will update my signature.

I would like to buy this weekend.

Thanks

Mike

Hi

Thanks for the reply and welcome.

I have just bought:

Corsair 600t
Asus maximus hero z87
I5 4670k @4.6
8gb corsair ram
samsung pr0 840 256gb
corsair 750w fully modular psu

And obviously the asus monitor.

I have been waiting for the custom cooled 290s and will pre order one if they are the better card to go for??

I will look into the MSI card. Thanks

Their are a lot that will prrobably say go AMD and other go Nvidia, peronally I like Nividia purely for the fact i have been lucky and not had a problem with them. Also they available now where as the 290's are not. My experience is my 780 classy overclocked nicely its not noisey when i play games and I have not had a problem with any games thus far hope it stays that way.

Another vote for the 780 Classified. Have been hugely impressed with it. Gets to around 1260Mhz core clock at stock volts and with the volt hack I am pretty sure it will go to 1350+ core with reasonable temps on the stock cooler.

Am also impressed by my reference Gigabyte 780 and also my MSI Gaming OC 780 though. They are all brilliant cards and overclock well.

No experience with 290s but have seen some mighty fine performance figures around. Best go with a non-ref version though.

Yeah the classified looks good to me especially with the free games but with the higher resolution its hard to pick the best one. Especially with the custom 290 not out yet!

I'm not on either 'team' im just after best performance really. Do you have a 1440p monitor and what games are you playing?

I play on a Dell U2913WM 2560*1080. Currently playing BF4, Bioshock Infinate, AC Black Flag, Far Cry 3. I am very happy with the fps I'm getting ffrom the card. I will be getting another and waiting for the G-sync to get a 1440 monitor. If you look at most of the benching threads on here you will see that both cards are getting some nice performance and I think when custom cooled AMD 290's are out.

I know this does not help much but honestly between the two cards there is not alopt with custom cooled 290's nearly here. So it's just really what personal preference you have.

Sounds like getting a custom r9 290 is the better option with it being cheaper and newer! I just hope it doesn't struggle with the high res.

I will probably go with the asus version.

From what I read the R9 cards are made for higher Res gaming.

I have a R9 290x and on Dayz i moved from 1080p yesterday to 1440p with a Catleap B2 120hz and my FPS seems to be the same if not better.

Go Nvidia IMO yes its more expensive but you get what you pay for these days, that's not to say AMD cards are not good because they are and you would be happy with either however a few points to consider:

Nvidia have G-sync lined up and I can't wait after having spent an hour in front of a demo screen

Mantle while AMD tech will have an open source component that specifically would allow Nvidia to write a driver and use mantle (If they can ever be bothered)

The 780 is a top performing card and it's in stock (A lightly oc'd 780 will mince a titan up)

I hear of more people with the 290 dreaded black screen issue every week, very rarely have I seen many Nvidia related threads (Specifically for the 780)

Miners are all over AMD cards right now pushing the price up and the availability down

its a 780.

I have ordered the asus r9 290 directcu ii hoping that it will perform better with the new cooler from reading reviews. The heat disappation out the back is what swayed me over the gigabyte swirling around in the case. I also bought the free games from ebay for £20! Still cheaper than the 780. I just hope it's up to it for arma at 1440p. I will probably crossfire in the future.
