Good afternoon

I am considering replacing my old 1080p 60hz 24" BenQ monitor and making the step up to 1440p with a 27" at 144hz. Is the step up to 1440p worth it, or is 1080p still best to stick with? The most demanding game I play is RDR2, although most of my gaming time is in sims. Willing to reach £300, but would prefer to be around the £250 mark.
Any advice thankfully received.

You're probably best sticking with 1080p unless you plan to upgrade the GPU as well since a 2060 will struggle at 1440p so you would really want at minimum a 3060ti or 3060 when those release next month.

The 2060 is a buget stop gap. My old gpu failed and I needed a replacement quickly, so got it s/h from ebay. Was looking towards a 3070 eventually, once the market calms down.

Go for the 1440P, you generally keep a monitor for longer than other hardware and the jump in resolution is a noticeable one.

I know there's a craze for 4K gaming right now, but I'd personally say that 1440P high refresh is the sweet spot, although it does depend on what you play.

If that's the case I'd go then 1440p although you may need to spend just over 300 to get something decent, gigabyte has some nice panels at a reasonable price so might be worth checking those out.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,110.79 (includes shipping: £20.82)

You could pick up a Pixio PX277 Prime (27", 1440P, 165hz, Freesync, IPS) for around £300 last I checked.

There's some solid options in the price range tbh, it's just finding something decent that's in stock.

Nvidia cards work with Freesync by the way, so don't get stuck looking at generally more costly g-sync options.

If the 2060 is going to struggle at 1440, would i be as well looking for a 2070 or 2080 interim?

If you turn some settings down the 2060 will be fine to be honest, I'd just hold out until you can get a 3060ti or better.

It's not worth hopping between interim cards given the current second hand market.

Cheers for that, I did think that maybe an expensive route to take. I will look into the monitor and then await the arrival of the 3070's at rrp.

2060 is perfectly capable of 1440p. It's similar in performance to a 1080 which I know for a fact can game at 1440p just fine.

This. I'm running an rx480 at 1440p and it copes ok-ish as long as your expectations are realistic with graphics settings for more demanding games, or you can still force a game to run at 1080p if you want.
