144hz affect screen tearing?

Hey guys,

Tried to look online but couldn't find anything definitive. Does having a 144hz monitor help with screen tearing?

It will do because you only get tearing when you have more frames than your monitor can show a second, so with a 60hz when you go over 60fps you start tearing but with 144hz you only start tearing over 144fps. It doesn't eliminate tearing but does help.
 
I see, makes a little bit more sense to me. Facing a hard decision of monitor upgrade.. I'm sure a lot of people are facing it too. If I wait for the Acer 1440p Freesync monitor I'll have to upgrade my GPU too which does seem a bit pointless to me since mine runs everything I play absolutely fine... Looking at the benq 144hz though. Hmm. Really not sure :(

Go for a cheapish 1080p 144hz and wait till UHD is ready? Or just go 60hz 1440p and wait.
 
Yeah could be a good idea. I recon I'll look for a 1080p 144hz. There's a few options on OC and am really keen for a 144hz monitor after playing on a friends. The screen tearing isn't a deal breaker for me really.. Only play RTS ^_^.

No problem, if you want to take a slight risk you might want to see what is in B grade, I saw a AOC 144hz that is normally £200 got for £110 their the other day.
 
Damn that's a decent price! I'm not in any major rush but saying that I'm fairly keen to get one soon. I'll keep an eye on the B grade stuff but I'm happy paying the full amount for a decent monitor

Not true. You can still get screen tearing below the refresh rate of your monitor, it's just less noticeable to some people. If as you say, screen tearing did not occur below your monitor refresh rate then there would be no need for things like v-sync and adaptive sync technologies, a simple fps cap would have done the trick.

As for OP, yes, a higher refresh rate monitor will reduce the visual effect of screen tearing even though its still there.
 
Thanks for the extra info titanium - The Acer 1440p Freesync monitor looks a steal at the current price and I would probably be doing myself a favour waiting for it. Just hoping it stays at roughly that price

Not true. You will get tearing any time your screen and gpu are not synced. Whether that be when the fps is lower or higher than the display refresh rate. The only way to totally eliminate tearing is with vsync or 1 of the newer technologies such as gsync & adaptive sync.

This is not true. You will always get tearing unless you enable v-sync. The ignorance around this astounds me. However with a 144hz monitor you will PERCEIVE less tearing as it will be less drastic on the horizontal.

ANYONE that says you don't get tearing without v-sync doesn't know what they're talking about.

Yes that cable would be fine as long as you have a full sized DisplayPort connection on your monitor. I would however suggest shopping around, £15 is a lot of money for a cable and ultimately no different then the ones on well known auction sites.

Unless you are running extremely high resolutions with high refresh rates, cables are pretty much all the same. As long as it is compatible with the connections on your GPU and Monitor and is long enough, that is all you need to worry about.
