144hz. Worth it?

Hi Guys,

I've seen many people say that having a 144hz monitor completely changes the way games feel. I've got two Dell UltraSharp U2414H which I'm being ever more tempted to sell to finance a single 24" 144z monitor.

I'm getting quite into CS:GO so would be interested if others have experience with the difference, especially when it comes to CS.

Cheers

Yes!

Some people may say no, but play on 60/75hz, then play on a 120/144hz monitor and I gurantee you will not look back.

I've used a 144hz 1080p monitor and it wasn't just gaming that was smoother... Everything was smoother. The mouse courser glided over the screen like butter!

Loosing the screen real estate will hurt though..

For traditional sample-and-hold displays:

60hz is 16.7 ms of persistence.
100hz is 10 ms of persistence.
120hz is 8.3 ms of persistence.
144 hz is 6.9ms of persistence.

You can just judge the improvement by math.

Note: a monitor with motion blur reduction e.g. Lightboost 100% level would need 500hz/500 fps to equal the equivalent of lightboost 100% (2ms persistence) and you would need 1000hz/1000 fps to match Benq blur reduction with an aggressive 1.0ms persistence setting for strobe duty. (strobed backlights can get persistence values by strobing the backlight to have the backlight turned off as pixels move in position, hiding motion blur).

I'm curious, how's the difference between 100Hz and 144Hz, vs 60Hz and 100Hz? As noticeable an improvement?

The difference is more noticeable between 60 and 100 than 100 and 144. Just ocing my current monitor from 60 to 75 has been a huge bonus to the point where i dont miss 120hz and are pretty happy with the responsiveness and the panel itself thanks to all the other bonus's like better color, ultra wide and so on. But in the end its a individual preference thing for sure. Now once 144hz ultra wide with good colors and minimal input lag hits the market i am of course gonna buy one as soon as i have the Money but i dont feel right now that im missing out on anything..

moved from Dell 3011 to Rog Swift

smoothness is a big factor. Doesnt improve reaction times, thats on you. but the overall feeling of the game is improved.

using an ips panel at work, i have the odd game of CSGO on there and its ok, but then i use my system at home and its not even comparable.

This basically. If you do the math on an average RT the difference is about 5%. So not much at all.

But the smoothness is just the best. I'll never buy a non 144hz screen again.

I do far prefer 144hz 1440p to 60hz 4k. For me it's just the smoothness of gameplay. It's hard to describe the game with the most impact for me was battlefield 4 and it has far far more immersive than 4k. It's like your arms are in front of you its so smooth. But I wouldn't go back to 60hz now it's just feels sluggish and horrible to play with.

But try both if you can and see what you prefer. As anything it's preference.

I'm on an ASUS MG279 (27" IPS @ 1440/144hz)from a iiyama B2712 (27" TN @1080/60hz)

It was a big difference in quality and 'smoothness' and I'm pleased with the upgrade.

I have dropped the monitor down to 120hz though and also ran some online tests for 120v144 and didn't notice much difference. It's a case of blink and you miss it I found.

60 to 120/144 though was very impressive!

Ive played on 120hz for years.. then i met IPS and i never looked back. so that advice of yours doesnt go for everyone.

I was also in this boat. I had a 120Hz monitor when the first 3D ones were coming out, and never looked back after changing it for my current Dell U2711 - I had the 120Hz monitor about a year and the Dell is coming up for 5, so... :)

Personally, I didn't (and still don't) really miss going from 120Hz to 60. That said, I don't do too much gaming these days and what I do play is almost always single player. The refresh rate is nice, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it's as essential an upgrade as, say, going from TN to IPS.

If you can afford it I'm sure the new IPS 144Hz monitors would be a good investment, however my money will be going to ultra wide at some point. Having used an ROG Swift and a 34UC97 back to back, the LG just wowed me more.

And specifically to gaming, what does G-Sync give you? I see a few places that some cs players turn it off because it can cause issues?

Other experiences of it?
