£150 for a girly camera

Hi chaps,

My girlfriend is after a new camera, she wants something to take out with her on nights out and on holiday, so it's got to be compact and have a reasonably large screen for viewing images on the camera.

The photos will only ever need to be printed at 5x7 size, so resolution isn't critical and she'll only want to point and shoot, therefore manual modes will probably be wasted on her. If it does video then great, but again it's not critical.

I've just spotted the Nikon Coolpix S200 which looks good - very slim and a nice big screen, there's offers to be had at £150 for the camera, but no doubt they could be haggled down or add on some free accessories.

All opinions welcome please.

Damn, you say it HAS to be a compact. I was just away to start another Canon-bashing thread, about how the 350D/400Ds were so eminently suited to small, feminine hands ;). But you want compact, so I won't. [Ducks and awaits incoming white-lens fury]

Take here to the Big Blue-Coloured High Street Camera Shop, and let her try a few. Then get yourself online, and buy it cheaper. Even for a compact, it's best to get the end user some hands-on with it before buying, even if the exact specs aren't that important.

But then, I was also going to initially suggest this! :p

The olympus mju 700 is nice. Close to your budget, 7 megapixel, 3x optical zoom and is supposedly weatherproof.

The selling point as a 'girly' model is that it not only comes in black and silver as you'd expect but also orange and blue.

You can see the camera on Olympus' site - HERE

The specs look alright, but I don't think it's slim enough for her. Think about it fitting in to a small bag (you know the type - completely pointless little vessels that barely hold a lipstick and a credit card).

*EDIT*

Just watched the promotional video and I take that back, it's tapered so it's not as big as I thought, the performance looks pretty impressive too, so it's turned in to a definate potential. I shall see if I can see one in the flesh.

Fuji Finepix F31 :)

I spotted this in my initial research, I thought it looked quite nice - however, how great is this new "FD - Face Detection" lark? I mean, why does it help that it knows it's faces from it's feet?

I know what you mean about it being tapered. But looks good. Better you see it in the flesh i'd imagine!

Looks like it could be really useful in drunken bar room photography moments! No need to worry about focussing just let the camera catch your mates faces for you!

Looks nice!

A mju mini is probably the right kind of size - used to have one, very girly indeed lol.
Yeah sisters got one and they do come in pink.

Was tempted to suggest it but worried a little as it's only 4 megapixels.

Good suggestion though!

They are great 'little' cameras! :)

They may only be 4mp but they have an excellent picture quality, and will easily do 5x7. I'm not sure you can buy them now now though.

Theres always the mju mini-s! 5mpixels :) Same look just more pixies

i had the 4 and my sister had the 5 and the performance of the earlier version is much better. not sure what they changed but it didn't help at all.

I wouldn't say that it's particularly girly but I just picked up a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12EB-K 7.2 mega pixel camera for £105 delivered from the web, awesome camera for such little money!
