What would be your recommendations....

Would mainly be for general use but with some Wavelab and Music Production software too.

Possibility of a Mac but want to know what PC based laptops you would recommend....

Thanks

As much as I love Macs and their quality laptops, I personally wouldn't get it - because my mate's got one but half the time, her software she had for Windows doesn't work for Macs. This includes her Epson printer.

a lot more hassle if you use a range of programs and input/output devices - unless you're willing to start "afresh" and go Mac software/hardware all the way.

Check out Acer's Centrino range. I've heard Asus's got a few neat ones too.

Actually, for £1500, you can look at the Sony range. Yes, they're slightly over priced but it's the quality and "sleek" feel that counts. Also, they've got good battery life (like all battery-operated Sony products).

For that price range I'd take a look at the Rock range of laptops. They're good quality and have good support.

I've got a Sony SZ1XP, around £1600- cheaper online.

Specs:

1280x800 Widescreen - Onyx black - looks fantastic.

GeForce 7400Go 128Mb dedicated and can use dynamic up to 192Mb from DDR2 System RAM - PCI Express interface. (Around 2 hours battery gaming)

AND (Hardware switch and reboot to change to)

Intel 945G Embedded 128Mb Shared graphics adapter!!! (I get around 5 hours on battery with this)

Other specs:

Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz - beats a X2-3800 in plain CPU musclepower.
1Gb DDR2 666 RAM.
DVD+/-RW and Dual Layer burner.
Biometric Fingerprint Scanner - and it works well!
Built in 802.11a/b/g and can use 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz.
Built in bluetooth.
2xUSB2 and Firewire.
100Gb Hard drive.

And all this in a 1.7Kg Carbon Fibre chassis with a 2mm thick screen...

I love it.

Certain high street retailers carry stock and give an extra year warranty for 2 years.

I'd Agree with that, I have an XCT and it is a brilliant laptop (more like a desktop replacement actually, it is a fairly hefty machine). You could probably get the XCT-X for £1500 now (though don't quote me on that). Has a dual core processor, my XCT only has a single core :(. (I do have a go 7800 GTX though :D, virtually as fast as the desktop equivalent!).

Pop onto their website and check out the forums, they are quite helpful and you can easily get in contact with the folk who work there as they post on the forum.
Customer support is also fantastic.

All I'll add is being on these forums, chances are you have a decent desktop rig. I went for the Sony SZ series as they pack one hell of a punch into a tiny, sexy lightweight carbon fibre chassis. When I go onsite as a consultant, I always get comments on how good looking the machine is, and that's before they know what's under the hood.

Centrino Duo Core, 7400GT dedicated, 100Gb HDD, Internal DVD-DL/RW, DDR2-666 1G etc...

How small does it have to be?

I love Dell laptops, I got a 9300 last year with 1.7GHz Centrino 1920x1200 17" screen, 1.2GB mem and a Geforce 6800 plus 3 year warranty for £1250

Unless you want small and light I can't recommend the Dells highly enough. I got two batteries for that price so have a total running time of 6 hours with wifi on.
