16 Core / 32 Thread - AMD APU with Artic Islands '400 series' Graphics + HBM: exascale supercomputer

So apparently this "design" doesn't use Zen or Arctic or even HBM, it's just a very vague outline of what such a chip might look like... honestly any forumite could've sketched it.

Nvidia have a similar idea involving a heavier balance of GPU cores.

The plateau at 6 cores is more than likely due to that number of cores hitting the gpus max number of calls it can process. Or a limitation in the communication between gpu and cpu is being hit.

Even with the above, more cores are still an advantage since other game processes are not competing with graphics rendering threads.


That's a point actually, however Mantle was reported to give better performance with more cores in some of the reviews I looked over so I'm thinking it's not just GPU bottleneck.



I see the opposite, AMD finally having all their ducks in a row..

New architecture, CPU and GPU, die shrink and HBM. This should be great from laptops all the way to full desktop towers.

Should be a positive step for AMD. Remember the huge core parts are for server etc, typical consumer Zen 'APU' will likely have 4 cores / 8 threads and new Graphics architecture along side HBM and on a die shrink.

The Zen 'CPU' line will likely be 8 core / 16 thread+ (No GPU).

Yeah, have heard about the dedicated CPU side but I thought it was 32 threaded, 16 cores. Maybe not my memories fuzzy. I would think that less but bigger cores still has a place.

But yes, I would hope AMD have the sense to target Laptops, tablets, SFF while they have maybe a years lead on the technology.
