Unboxing
Unboxing the keyboard and mouse combo was a pleasant surprise, at this price point I was just expecting a plain brown box. Not the case – Sumvision has gone to the effort of giving the full details of the combo.
In the box is both the keyboard and mouse, no manuals or accessories. The combo is wrapped in clear bags with the cables neatly twisty tied.
Appearance
Purely subjective – I don’t really like the overall appearance of the combo. It’s not that it’s ugly, I’m just more of a ‘no frills’ guy.
The keyboard is fairly subtle but the mouse is maybe a little too gamer bling, I think the mouse could definitely use toning down a notch. Less light pattern on the top of the mouse would go a long way to making it more appealing.
Can’t complain though – My kid loves all the pretty colours!
Build Quality
Picking out the keyboard and mouse from the box - they are expectedly light. However made of a decently thick and quality feeling plastic I don’t really rate the pair as ‘cheap’ just no big brand quality. Both the keyboard and mouse have a nice braided cable with decent lengths (Approx. 2m each).
No real flex in the keyboard and doesn’t rock or rattle when being typed on. The mouse however does have one flaw – the mouse wheel rattles when the mouse is moved quickly. This problem isn’t exclusive to this mouse, I’ve had the same problem with my Corsair M40 mouse (Which happens to be quite similar in shape to the Sumvision offering).
Overall I think there would be no concerns regarding the longevity of the combo, however this is hard to predict. Only time will tell!
Features & Performance
The keyboard has very even and decently bright backlighting, available in three colours (Red, Blue and Purple) with various brightness levels including off. A dedicated button is at the bottom of the keyboard between the right Alt and Ctrl keys. The key caps are made of a clear plastic to allow light bleed and appear to be sprayed black with a slightly rough texture. The lock buttons (Caps lock etc.) illuminate green at the top right of the keyboard.
The keys have a good level of travel and a ‘softer’ feedback coming from a cherry mechanical switch. If I had to compare the feel of the key press to another keyboard it’s almost identical to a Logitech G15 v2, high praise as the G15 is considered one of the best membrane typing experiences. The built in wrist rest is large enough to give some support while typing, I quickly got used to typing on this keyboard with no complaints.
The mouse illuminates with a colour cycle, unfortunately this cannot be switched to a single colour or turned off.
Using the mouse I really like the feel of the left and right click, really distinctive click. Comparing the feel of the click to other more expensive mice (Corsair M40, Razer Naga, Steelseries Sensei Raw, Logitech G300.) This comes out on top, I have no idea what microswitch they use but it feels great. The side buttons are mushy in comparison though with too much travel. It has a good feeling scroll wheel with decent feedback, two buttons on the side and a CPI/DPI toggle switch below the wheel. The available DPI options from the optical sensor are 800, 1200, 1600 and 2400.
Tracking was great on my Overclockers UK gaming surface with no twitches or unexpected mouse movements. I had no problems adjusting to it from my Corsair M40, definitely not a disappointment.
One thing I found though is the USB connectors on the combo are quite big width wise. I found it difficult to get them positioned on two adjacent ports on my laptop.
Conclusion
For the price it’s difficult to understand exactly where the ‘corners were cut’. My only real complaints are more down to the appearance of the combo, the performance is great and surpasses my expectations of this sub £15 set.
If you can get past or like the look of the set you’d be really hard pressed to find anything at this price point that comes close to this combo. You can barely find a basic keyboard and mouse set for this price let alone one with the lighting features of this set.
Bottom line - I’m not going to be replacing my Corsair combo with this anytime soon but it certainly will be kept as a spare should I ever need a stop gap.
Better than an aging Dell combo.
