£160 for a new car key

Purchase car key insurance, about £20 on top of your policy, doesn't affect NCB as it's a standalone policy.

Wait a few months, claim.

Profit.

It's about right for a main dealer price for a coded key.

But if you do a bit of searching on make specific forums, you'll usually find there are much, much cheaper alternatives. Most of them are reliant on you having a key already though to clone.

there is a difference in reprogramming the remote lock function and re-pairing a new transponder for the immobiliser. You can often do the first yourself through some convoluted series of actions, but new transponders usually need to be paired to the security system (actually a fairly simple process for dealers or indies with the correct kit, they just like to rip you off).
If the old key blade is the problem a good locksmith might be able to recover the transponder from the old key and insert it into the body of the new blank. Cutting a blade is generally not a problem if the entire old blade is to hand.

Um does this sound about right/fair??

The keys apparently have to go to Peugeot in France to be coded and cut, and then the garage here charge £50 for pairing them to the ECU?]
You need peugeot planet to code it and a transponder code. Done a few myself.

It's why I got that key insurance for an extra £10 on my policy!

I did not even realise you could get this :o. We've decided to just buy from the main dealer to save hassle (we're moving in three weeks :gulp:), but I'll look at this for insurance when we've moved.

I recently bought a new (old) car really, as is common with older cars the key fob didnt work :(.

Simple solution, open it up and have a look (i might be able to repair it).

I discovered the battery connector had come lose (common fault) and that both of the micro switches were fubar. So out comes the soldering iron re connect the battery and use some wire to test the circuit (short the switches).

All looked good, so dug out some new micro switches and replaced the faulty ones.

Off to car to test and after a quick sync i have a fully working key fob.

Much cheaper than going to a dealer :D

got offered this when renewing my insurance today. ''key insurance upto £500'' , had a giggle because a key for my car costs about £4 and then whatever the key cutter costs

seems well worth it for those with modern remote keys though. i imagine even more so if for example someone takes your key but then cant get your car because its blocked in. id guess you would want the whole car/key/whatever reprogrammed to something different to stop the key thief coming back for the car
