1600AF/2600 or wait for 3300x

Looking at picking up a CPU really soon.

I'd love the 3600 but cannot justify the additional costs at this point in time so want one of the budget option to tide me over.

Currently running a 4670k which I've had since 2013 so could do with an upgrade.

The 1600AF and 2600 are basically the same so do you think this is a better option than waiting for the 3300x?

I would until the B550 chipsets are launched in the next few days. The Ryzen 5 1600AF/2600 will probably do better in newer games which use more threads, and the Ryzen 3 3300X will do better in older games IMHO. Intel is launching a new range of CPUs so hopefully it will also cause better pricing for the Zen2 CPUs.

i have the motherboard on the way already. if the 1600/2600 will do better in newer games then that seems the clear choice?

The 3100 will be much faster than the 2600/1600 in mostly everything gaming related. The 8 thread 7700K still beats them in all games benched today. 3100 would be my choice then if you fancy an upgrade you can pop in a Zen 3 part when released or a higher core count zen 2.

The Ryzen 3 3300X,is a single CCX CPU so is much lower latency and has better single core performance. Lots of games are based on older engines so it will do better, but once games move to more cores, the Ryzen 5 1600AF has more reserve grunt left as it has 50% more threads. We are not quite there yet,but it will be more evident from next year onwards as even Intel now is adding HT to most of its parts including the Core i3 and Core i5.

It depends on how long you intend to keep these CPUs.I would also say look for deals on the Ryzen 5 3600,as I have seen them sometimes dip closer to £150.

Either way any of these CPUs will be a decent improvement over what you have IMHO.

There is a rumour Zen3 won't work in B450 motherboards, but we will know on Thursday. Check out the Zen3 thread.

I just made a small second system of ryzen parts around the 2600. It cost me £220 for a whole system (apart from sad which I had) but case with psi, 2600, 8gb ram, 1gb 710. It’s a great budget system .. can’t find any fault at that price.

I have a Ryzen 5 2600 with a GTX1080,and it does surprisingly well!

I've been pretty amazed with it to be honest. I have the I5 8600K @5ghz and spent a fortune when it was released making it fast as possible on the itx front. This was just a lockdown boredom project really. For the £220 its totally flying with 3000mhz memory. Its such performance for the price I would have to recommend it to everyone if buying second hand.

Also after AMD pulled its stunt with artificially locking out Zen3 with the B450(mine is a decent motherboard),I might keeping it a bit longer, and getting a secondhand Ryzen 7 3700X at some point.

We'll I went with the following.

B450m Mortar Max £60
1600af £95
16gb hyperx fury 3200 £80

Hopefully the memory/CPU will overclock a little.

And from my research the mobo is the best matx one available in b450 format. Ie good VRM and will support newer Zen's

Coming from a 4670k

Unreal 5 is going to be available next year so it is likely that high IPC single core CCX CPU will be relegated in not so near future games as the engine will likely require minimum 6c/12t to be optimum. PlayStation 5 spec is based on 8c/16t so I guess the extra cores are to handle other affairs from gaming such as background updates and system management and communications.

I think the OP went for the Ryzen 5 1600AF and it will probably last longer IMHO.

I recently put myself a very similar rig together to replace a 3570K running at 4.6GHZ and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Games like The Division 2 and Assassins Creed Odyssey are much, much better experiences than they were on the i5.

I intend to pop in a 3700/4700 on the cheap in a year or two, so I expect I'll be good to go for a few years to come outside of a GPU update.

I was a little gutted as I bought the mobo before they said they weren't supporting it but on the basis that MSI had said that they would.

Least it will last me a while.
