16gig mem upgrade

Hi guys,

I currently have 8gb of this but I've noticed lately I'm almost maxing it out whilst gaming/video/multitasking etc. so I want to invest in another 8gb :)

My mobo and the rest of my setup, see sig, will hopefully last me another 18 months/2 years the way I'm going so it is definitely worth the investment but what I want to know is, is it better to get another 8gb (2x4gb) of the corsair stuff or should I spend a little extra and get 2x8gb sticks? Will I see any performance issues with 4x4gb?

I'd like to know this as well :) I have the exact same memory and the exact same problems. Games crashing due to running out of memory etc.

I'm thinking this and then selling my old stuff on :cool:

I'm much rather have just the 2 sticks than the 4 having thought about it, for stability and performance etc. I'm sticking with Corsair mainly because of their reliability and support. Not quite sure I'm ready to trust another manufacturer with something as vital as my memory just yet...
 
I'm thinking of upgrading to 16GB too. Trouble is I have a Mini ITX board with only two slots, both of which have a stick of 4GB Patriot Viper 3 2133Mhz memory in them.

Is it even worth it? What are the chances of getting a decent value on the old memory selling on eBay or wherever?

The Corsair stuff is overpriced for what it is really. Basically all RAM these days has a lifetime warranty, and you get get a 2400Mhz kit for sub £100. RAM is RAM really, and if it works it works. Many on the forum have used teamgroup, kingston etc with no problems, and generally if you have problems with your RAM it'll be when you get it, so OcUK (having great customer service) will refund/replace it for you no problem :)

That's cheap, fast, and works
However, using a 2500k your CPU *might* not be able to run the 2400Mhz stuff properly, so you might have to downclock/your board might downclock it to 2133Mhz or so

All depends on what you use the PC for, whether you ever find you need more etc :)
 
Mainly a bit of everything, I game at 1440p, often have to deal with large databases, etc. I checked my memory usage a few times, it goes as low as 3.5GB and as high as 7.5GB when I've got a lot running.

One question I had was if I bought ram that was a different speed to what I have now, will it all just run at the slowest?
 
Well if you replace your current kit, if you set the XMP profile on the new RAM it should run at the speed it's designed for depending on whether you have a board that supports that speed, whether your IMC can handle it etc
