Hello,

Can anyone point me in the direction where I can get a 17" or 19" TFT Monitor with S-Video input added? I am after a cheap way of running TV through the Monitor via a SCART to S-Video convertor coming from a Digital Freeview box but am having trouble finding such monitors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, under £200 is the budget if that helps.

Hey TomWilko,

as you can see, most monitors offered on the OcUK site don't have an
option for S-video input apart from the Dell ones and some others.
Although they also come in a steeper price (but are also bigger of size).

What you can do is buy a VGA box which is only about 40-50 quid
and hook the freeview tuner up on that. The quality might go down a
bit since the signal goes through the box but speaking from experience
it's definitely not bad. Other disadvantages are that you can't switch
between inputs through the monitor and have to fiddle with cables
each time you want to watch tv, hook up a pc/laptop or play
a 360 on it.

I've got a freeview tv tuner and a couple of consoles hooked up to
my monitor through a vga box and am looking at replacing the monitor
as well (sucks having to swap some cables all the time).

Wished more monitors (at different sizes) would support multi input..

Hope this (long) answer helped a bit and good luck !.

Would the quality be up to say VHS standard? I am not after anything exceptional, its only for my room.

The quality's definitely not bad when you hook up a freeview tuner
onto the vga box. I've been hooking up a tuner through the vga
box now for a good couple of years , good for saving space
when you're a student :)

If it's up to vhs quality .. I'd say yes, definitely.

Also, that monitor you posted would suit you since it's got the
multiple inputs like the dell ones. So, no hassle with cables all
the time !.

But check out reviews for the monitor itself, and dead pixel policy etc

Good luck !.

Never used a VGA box at all, but s-video gives a good sharp picture for standard definition. It's just a touch below RBG in quality if you've ever seen RGB. RGB has slightly more vivid colour IMO.

I should point out I've never used a freeview box through a scart-to-svideo adaptor before. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, but not having tested it I can't be 100% sure. When my Dell 2007WFP turns up I'll be able to test it (with sky digital), but that could be a week yet. The adaptor is just basically a scart plug with s-video, composite and red and white audio outputs on the back. You can pick them up in B&Q or electrical retailers, or online. Then you would need a twin phono to 3.5 mm stereo lead for the audio, since s-video only carries the picture, assuming you wanted to use the monitors speakers. And you'd need an s-video lead.

Cheers for the help guys, for the budget saving and also the convenience, I think a VGA Convertor with a good widescreen monitor is whats needed.

Thanks again.

Yeah I think that's the better value option. Just be aware that some of the 19" widescreens don't have any aspect ratio settings, so when you're watching something in widescreen it will look fine, but when you're watching something in 4:3, it will probably get stretched horizontally.
