17-40L - any easy way to check focusing?

Well it looks like my 17-40L is absolutely fine focus wise. But the sharpness is just a bit of a let down compared to the 70-200L.

Looks like i'll be selling it though to fund the 24-70L F2.8 instead. Gah that makes 3 L glass purchases in a month

From what i've read, the 70-200 F/4 L is the sharpest L zoom going... So you're going to be dissapointed with any lens to be honest.

Yeah I know. Gah I hate having to pick lenses. I have a real kit bag crisis atm :(

Maybe the Tamron 18-50 F2.8 will fit the bill.. if somebody in the UK had some!!

You looked at the sigma 18-50 f/2.8 sigma? Supposed to be tack sharp that lens.

Hmm i've heard quite a few bad things. Usual Sigma issues with quality control. :(

I swapped my 17-40L for a 28 - 135 IS....the colours aren't as fantastic or life-like, but I found it's sharper, lighter and cheaper - a better walkabout lens.

You do lose the wide angle, though...that can be a bit limiting at times on a DSLR :(

It's sharp but I don't think its THAT sharp personally. Some of the high end zooms are mind blowing.

..?

This is a high end zoom, it's sharper than the 70-200 F/2.8 and if you get a good copy even the f/2.8 IS. There's really no Canon zoom i know which is sharper than it, and that's the view of a lot of others not just me.

Yeah the 70-200 F4 is sharp but it's too slow to be used indoors at 200mm. The 2.8 and IS version with the extra 1 stop give the flexibility required to take photos at 200mm with safe shutter speeds.

Oh aye, never said it could be used indoors :p

ISO 3200 minimum for indoor shooting :(

It's made to the same specifications as the F/2.8 though? Not trying to be picky at all but have you got any literature that shows the 70-200 F/4 as being the sharpest. Not aiming to disprove what you've said, moreover give myself a further pat on the back for buying one

MTF charts = sharpness basically... F/4 > * 70-200's

Not being picky either but ..... from the link you posted above I found this on the 70-200 F2.8 ;)

In the lab the lens showed that it is far from being qualified for retirement. In fact the performance figures beat both its IS sister lens as well as the EF 70-200mm f/4L - not by much (about a half "school mark") but clearly measurable

Just under the MTF section :)
