17. No job. No GCSE's. No experience.

LOl just listening to the radio saying exam results are everything in life, shows you are able to knuckle down and work hard.

Radio 1 I believe

You can get NVQ's from the dole, i did a course through them in manchester to get my lvl 2/3. Maybe have a word with them for courses.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've got an appointment scheduled with my Connexions advisor and hopefully something good will come of it.

Have a look at big companies.
For instance it is reasonable easy to start of on the railway and work your way up. As longs as you show willing and don't get stuck in a rut which most people do. There's probably hundreds of other places like this.

Some interesting comments to say the least...

Kudos for wanting to sort yourself out! :)

I'd echo the thoughts of other posters - Maths, English and Science at GCSE level would probably be your best bet. As long as you have them, you'd be able to get a place on most A-Level college courses - or, if you prefer - a more vocational route such as a BTEC first national..

I'd agree with everything that DJ_Jestar said.. and I'll add the following - qualifications aren't everything - but Maths, Science and English at GCSE level are a must in the eyes of 'most' employers!

Good luck with your endeavours - and remember that it's never too late to change things for the better...

I would get in touch with the people at Connexions. They should have already tried to contact you anyway. Their aim is to chase people up and find out what their current job/eduction state of play is. If you are unemployed or have no idea what direction to go, they will give you some good advice.

hands up for the lies.

GCSE's are worthless in most circumstances.

tell them youve got 7 gcse's and your all done - 1 line in your cv should cover it.

ps advice only good if you have some capability with maths n english :)

if they rumble you, they might fire you but probably not tbh. worth the risk imo.

Would not recomend lying on your CV, maybe push your work experiance a bit more if you have any, but dont put 7 GCSE's if you have not got 7. not a good thing to do.

Army is good, unless you get posted. So be warned about that route but worth looking into as the IT section has to have some nice bits to learn on. Otherwise get to college and ask them for advice too. You have pleanty of time, your only 17 FFS! lol.

Seriously, worst. advice. ever.

I have seen first hand several people being marched out the door after being rumbled couple of weeks after starting. No reference etc. They. Do. Check!!

Connexions will support you but they aren't a magic fix (I'm a Connexions Advisor :p) be prepared to come away from your appointment with a few steps to help you achieve your goals. You Personal Advisor should create you an Action Plan.

Meet people in your situation every day - it's not a grim as you may feel it is, plenty of stuff out there for you to do :) Good luck!

References usualy will be checked. Exam results often won't.
I've worked in 4 different IT companies, in each there has been at least a couple of people being fired solely because they couldn't prove the exam results

EDIT - Besides, i have been to dozens of IT interviews were they request you bring in you certificates and they make photocopies of them!

Do they acualy check though?

I went on a BTEC National without having my GCSEs. This was 15 years ago though.

EDIT

When I enrolled on the coruse they asked me for the proof , I said I didn't have it. They said ok, bring it in on your first day though I was never asked for it again.

if they do ask then you can do a BTEC first certificate. a short course aimed at people who failed GCSES. infact the engineering one that people at my work did was 1 day and one night a week for a year.

it gets you straight onto the national diploma or national certificate

mate, dont shy away from maccyd's just because you think its below you. its a wage and at the moment there are more qualified people than you taking jobs there.

I left school with nothing, only a couple of GCSEs, (E F grades) became a welder until I was 18, to cut a long story short I decided I should try to properly get into I.T. I went to college (electronics) with nothing other than fanatical enthusiasm, shot to the top of the class and got offered a part time job working in the I.T department.. Worked my absolute ass off and asked for more, whilst getting paid minimum wage. Eventually I did a CCNA when I was 19, quickly left and got my first proper job which paid over £30k. Went from there.. I'm now one of the highest paid engineers working for the 2nd largest ISP in the UK.. No GCSEs Degrees, NVQs, nothing, 26 years old.

If you're willing to start from the bottom and work like hell, you'll get very good at what you do a lot quicker than you think, and at the same time set yourself apart from others.

Three options tbh mate.

Work in a dead end job for the rest of your life. Probably the best paying being production line or groundworking.
Go to college and get gcses then a levels or an apprenticeship.
Go into the army if you're stupid enough to want to work for george "corrupt selfish" bush not queen and country.

Depends what works for you.

Th sort of IT jobs that require no training are usually cleaning old computer parts and selling them on in a warehouse. Or working in a call centre, both dead end and boring even if they are technically IT.

Make a CV with a truely epic sob story.

Say that you went through a rough phase that made you stronger. Made you more determined and more of a man!!

then turn up to interviews with a chest rug sprouting out of your shirt, with biceps bigger than arnies, and talk like Batman in the dark knight.

job offers will roll in! :D
