Its 17 years today since 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives supporting their team.

For those of us who remember it Im sure will spare a sombre thought today as we take our seats on the terraces.
It could have been any one of us.

For those that were too young , loads of good info here including a disturbing video of the tragedy http://www.contrast.org/hillsborough/history/index.shtm

And here is the home page of the justice campaign http://www.contrast.org/hillsborough/home.shtm

Not one person at the FA , Sheffield Wednesday FC , the police or the local council lost a days pay over the deaths.

The government and the FA also use this as a sickening scapegoat to hide behind when refusing to bring back standing terraces.
If you read the background of the disaster and the two reports by Lord Justice Taylor , this simply isnt the case.

Check out the campaign for safe standing here - http://www.standupsitdown.co.uk/

RIP lads and lasses , this fella will toast a pint to you this afternoon.

RIP

Even though i was not there and didn't know any of the victims i can remember every second of that day as if it was yesterday :(

I remember the day vividly, watched it in the boozer after we'd played Newcastle at Highbury, we were all totally shocked all night, a very sad day indeed and my thoughts go out to all those concerned. :(

Sooo what actually happened? I was 1 at the time so I don't know. None of your links explain. Was it some kind of crush? RIP
From memory what basically happened was I think the match had been delayed due to Liverpool fans arriving late to the game. Problems with transport. There was a build up of fans at the turnstiles at the away end (Leppings IIRC) and there started to be a small crush as it bottlenecked at the turnstiles.

It was decided to open a non-turnstile gate further down the stand, and the amount of people coming in made the problem heighten right at the from of the segregated terraces. The terraces were at that time fenced off with huge steel fences to combat hooliganism. The problem wasn't noticed for some time and people simply couldn't get out at the front, where people at the back didn't know they were causing the problem and simply kept coming.

People spilled out onto the pitch in the end, and were pulled by other fans over the fences.

Hundreds of people were injured and nearly a hundred lost their lives :(

This is all from memory so if anything is inaccurate I apologise.

fairly accurate , the game was not actually delayed ( it may have helped if it had been )

An absolute tragedy and although 17 years ago, I do remember it.

My dad took me to my first match in the mid 1980's and it was mostly all standing then. I remember the surges from people behind at other matches and this was when Newcastle has metal fences around the pitch to try to stop hooliganism.

Although I have fond memories of standing in the old main stand and also in the old Gallowgate end, all seats ends any possible repeat of the Hillsborough disaster and sad as it is that there is no standing now, I do agree with it.

RIP.

Dad was at the game with Forest. Very sad, said it was so hard to just have to stand there. He's been back to Hillsborough since then and he said it still holds a horrible atmosphere for him.

As a Liverpool fan, I remember it well - a terrible day.

But I am glad it got rid of the standing areas at grounds. I remember at Anfield on the Kop it was a complete nightmare and even as a fit 19-year-old the surges were scary and downright bloody dangerous. I took to standing with my back to one of the barriers so that the surge got stuck behind me and the one in front left me behind.

Yes, standing at a football match is how it should be watched but not on an open terrace.

A sad day indeed :( i was only 5 at the time, but have sort of memories of the day, it's a great shame that it ended standing at top flight games as i love standing at games, and as a lower league fan i still get the pleasure of standing on the terraces on away trips to the likes of Brentford, Colchester, Cardiff (till they went up) and others, there really is no better way to enjoy a football game IMO.

Will never forget watching the pictures on TV.

The Bradford City fire was also horrendous. 52 people dead there.

While I have every simpathy for all those that were involved with Hillsborough. It really does get me angry when the likes of the Bradford fire gets forgotten just because its a smaller club/city. Both equally tradgic but dont get the same coverage. I wonder if the 11 May will make the news, doubt it :(
