Hello all,

I’m just in the process of putting together an upgrade for my PC, but it is about £1000 more than I have spent before and I'm not entirely sure of my decisions.

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 780Ti Superclock ACX 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (03G-P4-2884-KR) £559.99
1 x Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI EXTREME Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £299.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian 900D Super Tower Case (CC-9011022-WW) £274.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £245.99
1 x Corsair RM Series RM 1000 '80+ Gold' 1000W Power Supply (CP-9020062-UK) £139.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX24C11T3K2/16X) £139.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H105 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060016-WW ) £89.99
Total : £1,768.63 (includes shipping : £14.75).

(KB, mouse, monitors, hard drives, optical I all have already ready to go.)

Is there any glaring errors there I might have missed?

I'd very much like to keep the 780 TI and with future pay checks I'd like to SLI it for some lovely 3 monitor gaming - will air be enough to cool them in close proximity?

Thanks very much for any help you can offer, it is a big investment!

Seems very high end kit, what will you be using it for?

Hi, yup I'd like to keep it relevant for gaming for a long time. Other than that there will be modelling/rendering and general dev work. I was looking at maybe £1100 - 1200 but just thought I should go the whole hog really.

That case is a massive overspend imo. Unless you are planning a watercooled build ?

The same goes for the motherboard. You can get one of the cheaper Asus boards, or the Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H if you plan on a red theme.

The Asus 780ti card is a very good card. There is a review by 8pack somewhere on the forum.

Guys this is fantastic. I knew there were savings to be made in the build, I'd have preferred the size of the 900D but the cost reduction is just too great really.

Have you seen a 900D and 700D in person? The 900D is gorgeously monstrous. The 700D will have all the room you should need and is, in my opinion, a bit better looking because of it's proportions.

EDIT: If you need the space, you need the space. However, if you don't it really is inappropriately large.

Cases will generally last you several builds if you get a decent one. Any plans for the future eg watercooling? I'm not saying that a 900d is a good idea but if in future you want to go water, it could be an option. 700d is a decent choice as well.

I agree with the thoughts above,

The Spec in your OP is a bit over-the-top.. (i think its a bit of a waste of money)

As said, the case is a part where you've massively over-specced. Unless you'r running 3-4 GPU's and Watercooling (Daul Loops) the 900D is massively over the top.

There are a lot of cases between £100-£150 which will suit your needs just as well (some have been mentioned above)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Obsidian 750D Full Tower Case - Black (CC-9011035-WW) £124.99
1 x Corsair Carbide 540 High Airflow ATX Cube Case - Black (CC-9011030-WW) £104.99
1 x NZXT H440 Mid Tower Case - Black £94.99
Total : £346.39 (includes shipping : £17.85).

The motherboard has also been over-specced. That is the TOP TOP end of motherboard, with options for LN2 cooling, massive WC capabitilies and serious Over voltage options. None of which will be used by 98% of their owners. (only 8-Pack really).

There are loads of motherboard options in the £100-£160 range.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI HERO Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £152.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard with *FREE COOLERMASTER SEIDON 120V COOLER £143.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-OC Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £142.99
1 x Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z87 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-D3H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £91.99
Total : £651.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

PSU's also have a lot of different choice, the corsairs aren't as good as they used to be anymore.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone Strider Gold Evolution 1000w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply (ST1000-G) £139.99
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £139.99
1 x Seasonic M12II EVO Edition 850W '80 Plus Bronze' Fully Modular Power Supply £89.99
Total : £384.07 (includes shipping : £11.75).

^^+1

There was me scrolling through the thread thinking....."why has no-one balanced out the build or told him it's OTT".

Nice to see some common sense here, nice one Doom!

I would first suggest you think about what space you need and if you will be looking to upgrade in the near future. A single 780Ti/290x will last you a good number of years, unless you're looking at 4k panels, and any more than a single card will be pointless unless you're running over multiple monitors or a high-res 27" panel.

Have you considered MATX? Parvum S2? Maybe a powerful little ITX like the Corsair 250D? They will be idea for running a single card and paired with a big SSD & mech drive, you cannot go wrong!

Diminishing returns over £1000 IMO, better to spend less and make more frequent upgrades (and sell kit while it's got value) than throw a load of money at it hoping for years and years of service.

As above the motherboard and case were bad value for money unless you get into extreme cooling and overclocking. The cases suggested above will definitely still be future proof should you want to get into watercooling as they all have room for radiators, they'd only limit extensive dual loops with 480rads.

The Carbide cube case is a great choice for functionality and internal looks. I personally have never liked cubes but thats a personal preference.

It would be far better to save at least 200-250 on these components and go for SLI or Xfire which will ensure you're ready to game at 4K (Ultra HD res).

Whilst I have typically been NV camp , Xfire 290xs will be very nice!

If you have the floor/desk space for the Air 540 and don't plan on doing a watercool build in the 900D like someone mentioned then it's a great case with AMPLE space for any air cool build.

You could argue looks are a bit marmite but I love it!

I added that motherboard yesterday afternoon, after sleeping on it and reading this, I was being silly to consider it really - just burning money. I included it, along with the 900D because I could SLI, add watercooling properly etc IF I wanted to in the future (2, 3 years down the line). From previous experience I've not had a computer longer than 2 or 3 years without something major changing anyway (making that whole thing moot). So yeah, I'll save the money and still have basically the same machine for my uses (but there is still room for these changes if it lasts that long).

More sensible, I feel. I'll have a sleep over the 700 or the 540 cases.

Thanks everyone for all the input regarding this, it should be fairly obvious I'm a bit out of my depth with the high end specs.
