So with the AMD deals on, I picked up a Vega 64 which has spurred on a new build

Sapphire’s website recommends a massive 850W power supply to run this thing tho!

I’m sure that’s overkill and had the Seasonic Focus Plus 80+ Gold 650W in mind. Can anyone with more knowledge confirm if this would be okay?

Specs will be roughly...
1700X possible Overclocking down the line
Cryorig M9
The Vega 64 - definitely plan on Overclocking (2x 8 pin connectors needed!!)
1 SSD
1 HDD
4+ case fans

Power consumption for a Vega 64 in reviews is all over the place but KitGuru's review of the same Sapphire card put total system power draw at just under 450w. With that in mind you should be ok with a Seasonic Focus Plus 650w. However, let me give you some food for thought. The Focus Plus 650w is £94.99 and out of stock. For just £10 more you can get the Focus Plus 750w for £104.99 which is in stock and will give you some extra headroom.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

I have looked at several Vega 64 reviews trying to see how much power you need and all came to basically the same conclusion that overclocking Vega 64 isn't really worth it. It increases power draw and heat significantly while only giving tiny performance gains. Things may have improved as drivers have matured but I would check out the Vega 64 owners thread to see what tweaks and improvements have been made since the card launched.

@pastymuncher thanks for the advice, I just went the full hog and grabbed a 850w. Figured for the sake of £20 which I've more than saved on a couple of the recent offers it won't hurt.

I'll definitely check out the owners thread as well to see what else I can get out of it, cheers

Good man, for the sake of £20 there's no point in skimping and you will have no doubts now that the psu will easily power your pc. When you connect up the power leads use a pair of seperate pci-e leads to power the card. I have seen some problems with people using the pair of plugs on a single lead.

Oh thanks for that, I totally would have been one of those people  haha

Looking on the Seasonic site they only supply it with 2x cables which both have the 2 connectors - that would drive my computer OCD mad having the 2nd unused plug on each cable!
Will have to invest in some extra single plug leads soon

It would drive me mad as well which is why I use braided cable extensions. A pair of these will see you good or you could go for the coloured ones by Phanteks or Bitfenix. I have a Phanteks black/red kit that has a pair of gpu cables, 24 pin and 8 pin motherboard cables to match my colour scheme.

Love the look of the white set from Bitfenix, might have

As these are extensions rather than entire replacement cables, do you just leave the cable coming out of the PSU tucked in the back/bottom somewhere out of sight, and then only run the extension to where you need to?
If so have you noticed it affect airflow much?

You just plug them onto the end of the PSU's cables and then lose the surplus behind the motherboard tray. I am rather fussy when it comes to cable management so all you can ever see of my cables is the few inches that are plugged into the card, motherboard, drives. The rest have always been tucked behind the motherboard tray or in my current case, in the bottom compartment out of sight.

would not touch a corsair .. evga or something similar

Whats the reason for not going Corsair? Was considering this PSU myself for a Vega 64 build. The RM750x 2018 seems to get good reviews; jonnyguru, tomshardware, hardocp etc. Has a 10 year warranty, UK RMA and is a nice price on sale.

The only PSU I have seen that a manufacturer warns against using with the Vega 64 is the Seasonic Focus Plus, which is a shame because it seems like an otherwise good choice.

Edit: From translating the Chinese text, seems it was a problem with Vegas high instantaneous current and the sensitivity of the "overcurrent protection point and trigger time of some FOCUS PLUS power supplies". Apparently fixed in units made after Jan 2018.
