I believe it's "does not equal"... as in it';s representing a diaganol line through a single = sign.

Haven't read the other posts, so if Im wrong sorry.

Also, in programming it tends to be != i believe

=/= means does not equal to.
I've just finished a session on funtions, domain & range and work with these soddin' things a lot as they **** me off! :mad:

For example, y=sqrt(5x) where x > 0 , x =/= 0
Basically says y equals square root of (5x) where x is more than zero and x does not equal to zero.

So, 'Faith =/= creationism' means faith does not equal creationism

!= is used to mean 'not equal to' in derivatives of the C language (! meaning 'not'), and <> is used by BASIC derivatives (i.e. less than or greater than). As far as I'm aware they're not used outside programming. As Vixen said, it should be an equals sign with a line through it.
