ASUS P5B “What a Joke”

Updated my ASUS P5B Deluxe Bios to 1101 tonight as I was sick of the crapy double boots I was getting from version 0804! The reason I didn’t update before hand was I have the problem with the GeIL PC6400 800MHz and the timings (shore you have seen the threads and the NO FIX).

Anyway not even bothered with over clocking the system to be honest, all I want to do is get this MB kit (that was purchased from OC) to work at the speed it was designed to do.
I tried setting the memory timings before but couldn’t even get it to post, so settled with just changing the CPU Frequency to 210 and everything else to AUTO (this was the only way I could get it to boot).

Well now I have updated the bois it won’t even let me change that now (the CPU frequency is locked and wont move when I hit enter), and If I set the DRAM Frequency to 800Mhz and everything else to AUTO the motherboard can’t even set the CPU up correctly!!
I get a core speed of 1600 and FSB of 266 (as I said a joke)..

Please can someone help me out before I bin this pile of junk!

Xray :(

I assume you've tried reloading the default settings, booted and then tried to change the settings?

EDIT: What about the speedstep settings, are they disabled?

Right then, the best thing you could do is switch it off and take a loooooooooooooooooooooooong break, you appear to be in no mOOd to get into the finer points of trouble-shooting.

I know where you are at, sometimes these things can really get your back up but you really need to get yourself in the right 'headspace'

You may have a faulty piece of kit, don't just blame the motherboard, its one of the best in the world right now so its pretty unlikely thats the problem, it could be faulty though as could any single piece of your kit.

Go cool off and come back when the white foam has gone from your mouth! ;)

Just had enough of it now TBH

I tried a while back (see here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8180134#post8180134) to sort it out and didn’t seem to get anywhere then.

I only updated the I BIOS to fix the double boot problem!

Xray

Huh what double boot 'problem'? do you mean that thing it does after you have adjusted voltages/FSB in BIOS?

or does it do that all the time?

It dose it all the time, has done from day one!

Yes, the very early BIOS wouldn't reboot, but it was fixed quite a while back. And how he's managed to get it to default to 200FSB with a 6x multiplier is quite cool too. You couldn't do that if you tried ;)

As Big.Wayne suggests, do a BIOS reset, calm down and then let him talk you through it. He's got some cracking overclocks out of his P5B and I think it's reasonably fair to say he's the expert with that board.

[Makes Coffee and awaits P5B Overclocking Masterclass :D ]

And I'm pretty sure the GeIL PC6400 ULL problem was with ASUS P975 boards, wasn't it? James32 reported it some time back in a thread where Gibbo was making some bold claims for them. And as you're not supposed to be going over 400FSB, it doesn't affect you anyway, does it? I'm very confused by this.

Personally m8 I don't think there is any problem with your motherboard...the main problem here is the version of CPUZ you are using giving you wrong settings.

Version 1.39 does this to me, but using version 1.38 will give you the correct settings of

Core speed - 2400
Multiplier - x9

Try it and you will see its working perfectly.

1. Reset bios to defaults
2. Set vcore to 1.4v/1.425v
3. Set DDR to 800
4. Set vdimm to 2.1v
5. Reboot
6. Set PCI-E to 101
7. Set fsb to 333
8. Turn off C1E/Speedstep
9. Reboot
10. Run stability checks altering vcore (probably downwards) as appropriate.

Speedstep is setting your cpu for the lowest multiplier when your cpu is not used, so 6x in this case (when under load this will change to 9x and give 2.4ghz)

Give it a try and post back results :)
Good luck

Ok Guy’s

Thanks for all your help, have calmed down a bit now  . I managed to get the system up to a reasonable state and as Lord Alibaski said CPUZ was giving me some weird results. The multiplier was flickering between x 6.0 and x 9.0 and the core speed was changing as well!

Anyway all that aside, Bito I will give your suggestions a go!

1. Reset bios to defaults
2. Set vcore to 1.4v/1.425v
3. Set DDR to 800
4. Set vdimm to 2.1v
5. Reboot
6. Set PCI-E to 101
7. Set fsb to 333
8. Turn off C1E/Speedstep
9. Reboot
10. Run stability checks altering vcore (probably downwards) as appropriate.

Will post my results latter.

You have the same mem, mobo, BIOS and chip as I do.

Mines fine. User error tbqfh ;) :p

I can host my settings if you need...

Would be nice to have a look at them (Please :) )..........!

EIST at work

Indeed, isn't a cpu-z problem, the problem is you (xrayhead) didn't turn off speedstep and c1e, both these techs lower the multiplier when cpu is idle and increase the multiplier when the cpu is stressed.

Its a bit funny though...cos I have the same setup myself with EIST disabled.

It works fine in version 1.38 of cpuz but gives me the same results xrayhead is seeing in version 1.39. I also remember a version of Everest doing this as well...showing 1600 & x6 but as soon as I upgraded Everest it was fine....Same results when idle and full load.
