Lol I know that feeling. Mine has us staying in a luxury apartment lol.

I can only echo what has been said earlier about the tourist bus if it is your first visit. Get a two day pass for circa 25 euros and see the sights at your leisure. If you are interested in football at all you must do the camp nou tour. Parc Guell was a fave of mine as is la sagrada familia.
 
We did 4 days in Barcelona for about £250 each including the flights, hotel (4 star) and spending money. You should be able to fly with one of the discount airlines very cheaply, I flew with BMI Baby from Birmingham. It was booked 1 week in advance through lastminute.com.

That's not bad! We're flying from EMA as I live in Nottingham, it was ~£150ea for flights... the hotel is ~£150 /night :(.

Awesome, cheers mate. I'll mention the tourist bus... someone mentioned the Guadi or something to her. I'm not sure, I was tired and she wasn't actually listening to her boss at the time.

Gaudi was the designer who designed most of Barcelona's famous buildings: La pedrera, Parc Guell, La Sagrada Familia. His work is stunning and you can't visit Barcelona without seeing it. Picasso museum is class too as is the moderna art museum.

@ Quackers, La Sagrada Familia is a little bit out of the way of the 'main drag' and is in more of a residential type area. Plenty of more authentic Tapas and Café bars but if you are looking for big pubs/clubs then you will need to venture towards Placa Catalunya etc.

It's a little far but there is the underground metro which takes only a few minutes and drops you right in the centre of placa catalunya. Also one of the tour bus routes goes from placa catalunya via la sagrada familia.

Just stay clear of the ramblas full stop. Nothing of any worth on there in my opinion. Worth a walk up and down it to say you have done it but other than that it's just your usual mcdonalds and overpriced 'authentic' bars.

Head down to barceloneta and maremagnum for some really classy bars and restaurants if that's what you are after. Bit of a rip off but very nice...where the beautiful people go to see and be seen if you get my gist.

The streets off the south end of la rambla and in the raval can be a bit hairy at night time. My advice would just be to stay north end of la rambla and explorer the side streets around there if you do end up there, which you inevitably will do.
 
La rambla is north of the beach, its a blinkin great road that links the placa catalunya to the harbour front.

Like I say, head to barceloneta or maremagnum for classy places. Placa catalunya and the streets off it have plenty to see and do for bars etc. If you do end up on La Rambla, try not to go south of the market (la boqueria) as that is where it descends into shadyville.

If you are staying near la sagrada familia just hop on the metro to barceloneta and explore round there and you wont go far wrong.

Don't get the wrong impression from me about La Rambla- it's just it is a complete tourist trap and you are just wasting your time there in my opinion. It's not that shady if you keep your head about you and don't walk around waving your wallet or expensive camera around.
