Ware used to have the highest number of pubs/head of the population than anywhere in the UK. Therefore, live in Ware.

I believe St Albans contains the most pubs in a set area of distance, can't remember what that is though. Plus we have the oldest Inn in Britain as according to guiness records - Ye Olde Fighting Cocks (cue sniggering)

I can confirm that the whole of hatfield is a complete dump full of complete scum

Most of it, but you obviously haven't been on the road I'm from :). It's more of a buying area than a renting one though I think. Quite a few bungalows and family houses.

I wouldn't recommend hatfield for someone renting anyway...

OK - cheers for your help guys. The ones regarding the whole place being a dump are hardly constructive and suggesting I don"t bother aren"t great as I"ve got to. I have the job.

I"ll take a look at what there is to offer. I have a mate who is from (and still) St Albans. I will have a look at the places you guys have suggested! It cannot be much worse than living in the centre of Nottingham.

Regarding the job, it is working for a motorsport media company.

Having just spent 3 years of my life in Hatfield I am glad you're going to stay clear of there as somewhere to live, even though I had no trouble it wasn't the nicest place to live in general.

It's still got the same nickname don't worry - I doubt it has improved much though to be honest - although there's still nothing been done about the town square area - its all boarded up / closed shops still!

Helpful responses. Thanks. I formally accepted the job. I have 4-6 weeks to sort everything out. Thankfully I'm working for an absolutely awesome company and get to go to most motorsport events so can't be bad being paid to do a hobby and I'm sure I'll find somewhere just as good as Nottingham in or around the area. Within a 20 minute drive is fine. I don't start until 9.30am when in the office anyway so avoid school traffic etc.

huh? are you following me?

I'm also moving from nottingham to hatfield due to a job offer! (we'll st albans anyway)!

Yes, you're in the same boat as me, moving from Notts>Hatfield (ish) - bit of a coincidence. What is your confusion? My replies are related to the non helpful posts above! Hopefully we'll find somewhere equal to our current surroundings ;)

There is lots of helpful posts there.

Hatfield unfortunately is not great (i live in Old Hatfield and work in Hatfield but never do anything in Hatfield as it is pretty poor).

However as you now said you are happy to commute 20mins there are loads of possible places to live. It all depends how much you are willing to spend.

Within 20mins you have the lifes of Welwyn Garden City, St Albans, Sandridge, Welham Gren and maybe Hertford, Hitchin, Harpendon if traffic is light.

If you like to go out for a drink then i recommend St Albans and Hertford as both have decent pubs. Hertford is probably my favourite though.

That's good to know. well, there will only be the two of us. I'd really like to spend no more than £700/pcm. I was hoping for £500 but Iimagine that will get me a dump. 20 minutes commute is nothing, I can happily cope with that!

St Albans is apparantly a little more costly? My old uni housemate is running a pub there (having lived there all his life) and he says it's a nice area, just slightly more.

The only other problem, despite moving down is finding my girlfriend a job. She has a 2.1 from Leicester in a life science and would be happy doing any old office job. Even if it's just temping until she finds something permanent!

I'm happy to live anywhere really. We are both from the same tiny village so used to villages. If it's cheaper to live outside the towns then that's fine! I just need to know where to look :)

£700 is a fair budget, my flat is currently £600 but its mates rates as my wife works with our tenent, would be £650 - 700 if we went thru a agency. Hertford is pretty nice as said above, but the drive might annoy you everyday, I drive from welwyn to ware everyday (pretty much the same drive) and its so so boring

I used to rent a 2 bed house for ~700 in Panshanger in WGC and I drive from WGC to Hoddesdon every day for work, along the 414 then through Hertford every morning !
