£650ish should just about get you a decent 1 bed flat in Hitchin right next to the station (or at least it used to), other than that, Checkout thecomet online for property rentals.
Stevenage is as good/bad as any other place tbh and if you're driving to Hatfield it'd be a damn sight easier to commute from, if you're in Hitchin you've practically got to get to Stevenage for the A1 anyway!

Excellent. Thanks for the info chaps. I'm googling for letting agents. Some of the results are pretty drab. I'll see what I can get. We don't mind where we live really, so long as it's a reasonably nice area with about a 20min drive max to Hatfield that would be fine.
I live in Hertford and I love it here... there is a fair bit of snobbery though. One of the favourite sayings in the pub to insult people is "may you die alone in a bedsit in Hatfield" which seems a bit harsh!
The only place out of all the ones mentioned that I really wouldn't consider is Stevenage, it's not a nice place at all. Ware is attractive but for some reason is a bit "chavvy". You should see some of the people that get on and off the train at Ware in the evenings.

Xerox in Welwyn Garden always have jobs available. If she wants to use her degree then Glaxo are just up the road in Stevenage, and Roche are in WGC. According to Google there's this place too http://www.biopark.co.uk/
