Worth it for gaming? I found myself to play lots of pubg and destiny 2 as well as escape from tarkov type games with a 144hz 1440p monitor. Would it be worth it for me to do the upgrade or is it a waste of money?

Did it, so much better at high FPS and resolution. Memory running at 4,300 and CPU at 5.1 (or 5.3), it’s just much smoother and I’m on the same res/refresh.

Given the price of the 8700k are getting back to sensible (thanks Gibbo) i think do it and sell the 1800x it will almost pay for the swap.

I did the move from a 1700 at 3.9/3466 memory to a 8700 at 5ghz/3600 memory and totally worth it for myself. Higher scores across the board. PuBG hates ryzen cpus for some reason so you will definitely see a boost. Whether that boost is worth the cost is up to you. Check out hardware unboxed latest video for an idea on performance.

In the end it comes down to cost and if the improvement is worth it. The next generation Ryzen cpu’s Are out in the new year but my guess is they are unlikely to match an 8700 at pure gaming performance.

Which is exactly what he’s after so big yes really, 144hz will be better and sell the Old it’s a fairly low cost swap in my book ;)

And what games are going to hit anything close 144 FPS with a 1080Ti or be CPU limited by an overclocked 1800X? CSGO at 640x480?

Will it be an upgrade yes. But at huge expense.

So in other words unless selling your kit for good money I wouldn't bother.

Also fingers crossed more games will use Vulkan and DX12 in 2018 (they better!) and so the 'bottleneck' caused by the 1800x is really going to be intangible.

In the Gears of War 4 benchmarks which uses DX12 my 1700 @ 3.8ghz was getting well over 200fps.

With a 1080ti I would suggest doing it. I love Ryzen cpus but for high fps you need the intel chips. Less than a 1080ti the Ryzen is okay.

I saw a big difference from a Ryzen 1600 overclocked to 3.9 Ghz to a 8700K at stock never mind overclocked. I play Gears 4 a lot so it was necessary as Gears doesn't favor Ryzen.

These are the settings I use in multiplayer for a locked 144 fps using the in game limiter. It never dips on the 8700k but on the 1600 it would usually be around 125 fps on average and would dip as low as the high 90's during intense action.

Pointless if you have gsync/freesync.
I agree. PUBG isn't well optimised and the utilisation on the 6 core and up Ryzen processors is only around 30% according to the hardware unboxed video whereas the utilisation on the 8700K is 49% which would make a significant difference. This is due to shoddy programming though.

Op, what about the other games you mentioned? What sort of frame rates are you getting and are you happy with them?

Also, are you running your RAM at 2133MHZ? Because this can slow Ryzen down in games.

Quite a number of games at 1440p, 1080Ti is more than capable? Having owned an 1800x it tended to choke on high FPS and start to drop frames or periodically potato. Don’t forget the single thread performance on Ryzen is generally quite poor, so depends on title but I speak from my own experience.

1800x is not a bad CPU so let’s not make it an argument about that.

I agree. I would not have sold my Ryzen cpu if I had something other than my 1080ti and a 165Hz monitor.

I did forget to mention that I saw a big increase of approximately 40+fps in Destiny 2 public events. Minimum would drop to 50+ fps with Ryzen while the 8700k would be 90 fps. Destiny doesn't use the smt very well on Ryzen or Intel if I remember correctly.

Thanks for reiterating this. If aiming for 144hz+ then the 8700k is the better choice.
Just as @Smffy said, my 1700 would spaz out every now and again for no reason. Project cars 2 was also a game where I saw decent gains, particularly in multiplayer.

Those games that we have mentioned are games we have personally seen the differences in and not in just some youtube videos. Nobody is putting down the Ryzen processors. We wouldn't have bought them if they were rubbish but for a certain scenario intel is needed.

Also I would like to address the freesync and g-sync statement claiming that it wouldn't really matter. It certainly does matter. There is a slight blurring like motion blur that is noticeable at lower fps even while using these sync technologies. 70 fps with g-sync is not the same as 144 fps also with g-sync in fast motion games.

You still want the highest fps possible even with sync tech.

Agree 100%. Synced or not, 70fps is still 70fps and is nowhere near as smooth as 144.
Also, even synced, fps drops are very noticeable.
