;)

then we should wait until nvidia brings their next gen dx11 dual gpu so the comparison is fair. a current gen card beating a previous gen card is not sth to boast about.

By the time they actually make it to the market ATI will be having their refreshes more than likely and the nvidia offering will cost a million pounds. Let alone how many will actually be available, if ATI are suffering then Nvidia sure as hell will.

ok i may be exagerating here but you get the point

I do understand your point about comparing like with like etc. but the fact remains that nvidia are nowhere to be seen right now so the comparison can't be made so one that can be made will, i.e the soon to be released 5970 vs gtx295.

Edit: oh and fatboy how many of these have you got??? :) many? or :( many?

Don't get me wrong the 295 is a great card, just not quite as good as the 5870.

a much better and more sensible statement than your previous one...

Lol, the 5870 beats the 295 hands down.

yes the 5870 is definatly a better card, and only a real die hard would go for the nvidia alternative. as for myself i wouldnt go for either, id have a 5850 at the launch price or if i was going to be buying now id wait to see what nvidia bring to the table, we should get the launch details within a few weeks (mid december) i expect with availibility a couple of months latter (end febuary/march) then pick up whichever second tier card that is best bang for buck.

nothing we don't already know

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Radeon-HD-5970-Hemlock-Card-Specifications-126709.shtml

AMD's next-generation, dual-GPU graphics cards, the much-anticipated Radeon HD 5970, codenamed Hemlock, is just around the corner, given the increasing number of leaked details that have recently surfaced the Internet. While we still aren't certain when the new card becomes available, with TSMC's 40nm production issues, there are rumors pointing to an official release before the end of this month. On that note, it looks like we now have some details on the card's clock speeds and technical specifications.

According to a recent news article, coming from the fellows over at Fudzilla, the Sunnyvale, California-based chip maker will launch the much-anticipated Radeon HD 5970 with a core speed of 725Mhz. In addition, 'Hemlock', which packs two RV870 GPUs, will be featured with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, clocked at 1000MHz, and with two 256-bit interfaces. That's pretty much what you get from AMD's Radeon HD 5850 card, but performance is increased thanks to the adoption of the dual-GPU configuration.

In addition to that, the upcoming card sports double the Stream processors and texture units of the Radeon HD 5870, for a total of 3200 Stream processors and 160 texture units. This is one of the key points where performance enhancements should be noticed. Unfortunately, Fudzilla wasn't able to get details on the card's power consumption, although it's most likely that this will be somewhere north of 300W.

All of this should be taken with a grain of salt, as the card is not yet official and frequency details and specifications could change when AMD officially debuts its new flagship. Still, expect Hemlock to provide support for ATI CrossFireX technology and the new ATI Eyefinity solution, as well as support for DirectX 11-enabled applications. In addition, it's expected that, with NVIDIA's Fermi-based cards nowhere to be seen, the new dual-GPU Radeon card will provide AMD with the performance crown for some time.

Exactly, so how can the 5970's be around if the 5800's are not, TSMC can't do em, but if these are indeed here, then id say now you know why the 5800's are non-existant, and looks like they lied about poor yields, as they been hoarding em all for these, which would be disgraceful.
well they might just have shipped more dies to 59x0 series to make the series?, its no suprice, how can you make a dual die series without the dies?

they are all in limited supply so do it all matter that much?, its better to get out some 59x0 before chirstmas that not, so people that get $$$$ for chirstmas buys one afer and so on

Hopefully a cooler will be released for this beast before 2012. If you wanted to OC your 4870X2 you had to watercool, the one cooler that did show up was far too late.

Yeah but by then the 5870 will be last gen for ATI ;)

I'm not interested in fair, I'm interested in whoever has the best value card at the price I want to pay be it Nvidia or ATI

The 295 isn't last gen, it's nVidia's CURRENT GEN.

It's old tech, but it's not last gen until nVidia release something next generation.

It's hardly "unfair" to compare them.

Obviously, I knew this is how you'd react when ATi had the fastest single GPU.

Play it down as if it doesn't matter for what ever reason you can make up.

Hear hear. That Arctic Accelero cooler was going to be my purchase but when it wasnt released in the UK I ended up water cooling my 4870X2. You know fine well they wont have a 3rd party air cooler made in time, but bet your top dollar you'll get a waterblock for it soon enough...

Well at least there is a waterblock available already for it. I;m guessing if you have a wtaercooled rig and you buy a block you will get both cores to around 1100Mhz and the ram to 1300Mhz. Now that will be some performing beast.

Lol, I think Duran's a fanboy.
Lol doesn't take sarcasm well does he :p. I'll be happy to wait for nvidia to bring out their dual gpu to compare. £/performance anyone? Everyone knows the ati prices are jacked up because of supply n demand, I've seen loads of websites still around the £300 mark for 5870. When everyone starts to stock them, prices will drop.
Just see when the nvidia dual gpu comes out and see who's bang for the buck :p

So are these cards going to be available over the next week or so, I am still awaiting the arrival of my 5870 to finish the Titan Goliath build.. if I can replace it for the 5890.. or whatever the x2 is called this time, I will change my order.. please let me know.

My memory says 18th. I think FB said that NDA lifts on the 18th.... or I saw other sources claiming it releases 18th.

All I remember is day after L4D2 release, so yeah :p
