So sadly with other commitments these days I'm back to basics no more fun high powered jap cars for a while. But still need something

How are 182 cups or fiesta st's of that era holding up ? Getting all very rough and poor or still a good purchase ?

A lot of them will be high milers, but 100k isn't bad if it's been looked after. Mine's at 104k and is still going strong :)

Plenty of good condition 172, 182 and cup varieties around for 1-2k.

My 172 had just ticked over 157k when I sold it. I'd get on clio sport owners club on Facebook, you'll find the decent examples + get to know their history.

Wouldn't even consider a fiesta st against a 172/182 as a fun only car!

Clio sport over fiesta at anyway. One main thing to check on 172 / 182's is that the belts have been done and by a specialist. Otherwise it should be priced accordingly as they are around £500 if done properly.

Looking for something similar to replace my diesel Leon FR as new job means I'm not doing the travelling I used to do. What are common faults or issues to look for?

Seen this one for sale just down the road. What's with the exhaust? All the other Clio's of same spec have the exhaust clearly visible.

I honestly wouldn't even consider a 197/200 without the Recaro's, they just make the car entirely :(

Edit: Wow those wheels are trashed, I'd look for something else.

Can only find RS one's with the Recaro's but they come with a price tag. Did notice the wheels, and I'd of got garage to sort them before I bought it. Probably give it a miss tbh.

Next Clio is £7.5K which is just too much as I'm hoping to get a bit of money in back pocket when I trade mine in. Doesn't even have Recaro's either.

I miss my Fiesta ST :(

I have just bought a Fiesta ST after having one a couple of years ago.

Trust me when you have had more refined, faster, better built cars it's a weird feeling going back. The Fiesta is fun but uncomfortable and unrefined.

I bought mine as I need to concentrate money elsewhere but I am itching to get something bigger, smoother and german! Never happy :D

I sold my Clio on 110 (maybe 120?)k miles. It didn't need much doing either.

Engine wise it ran perfect, so cheap and easy to work on too. I completely regret selling it, really really wish I'd kept it. Such a fun hooligan car, that was incredibly cheap and easy to run.

I'd buy another if I was wanting fun on a budget.

I've drove a non recaro'd 200, the seats are better from memory. Not sure if they're as hugging as the 182 though?

It's surprising how different the 200 and the 182 drive though, the 200 is faster and more confident inspiring. I still preferred the 182 though.

My Clio 182 is at 98K (has both cup packs and the recaros) and is still fine apart from the odd niggle (Just replaced all four injectors after one stopped atomising fuel properly).

Buying a Megan 265 if you want to buy my Clio? haha

I did take a look at this in person but despite my Leon being 09 plate and 50.5K on the clock the salesman was only interested in a straight swap

Wouldn't bother with a 182 cup personally, none of the toys of the 182 (xenon lights, cruise control, climate control) and hardly loses any weight (the plus point of a 172 cup). If you get a Renault Clio / Megane make sure the belts have been done. If you get a Megane, check the windows work, the regulators fail. Had 3 Renault Sports, two 182 FF's and a Megane R26. Great cars, really fun to drive :)

I wouldn't bother with the 182 Cup, but I would get the 182 Full Fat with both the Cup packs. I've had my 182 for almost 8 years and I just can't force myself to get rid of it. It's just so much fun to drive, I probably drive it as much as the car I bought to replace it. Mines relatively low mileage for an 11 year old car at around 79K miles and is generally in pretty decent condition. One thing I would say is that it'll be almost impossible to find a completely standard one now days, most will have a stainless exhaust due to the original having rotted away years ago.

Can anyone explain the different models to me please? Looking on autotrader there seems to be VVT, and RS/Cup.

I assume you're referring to the 200?

VVT stands for variable valve timing, all of the RS models have it.

Cups are slightly more "driving orientated" versions of the standard Renault sports. Theres not such a big difference compared to the 172 vs 172 cup though.

The cup pack has stiffer springs, dampers and I believe a better anti roll bar that make it handle that bit better etc. The standard 200 is not a bad handling car at all though. It also gives you the anthracite wheels which look great. A lot of people would take a non-cup spec over a cup for a daily because the ride is quite harsh.

Edit: apparently renault went back to the 172 days with the 200 and the cup version is quite stripped back. What I described above was the 200 with the 'cup pack' aka 'full fat'
