I fixed my temperatures :)

At first they were going up to 99 degrees in Linx at these same settings and my PC crashing around test 8-10:

What I did was move my third Xigmatek fan from my graphics cards intake to use as a top case fan intake blowing onto the CPU area, and then the H2O 620 has two Xigmatecs exhausting in a push / pull setup.

So three of these fans, - one as an intake, and two on the radiator exhausting + an Antec H2O 620 is epic:

Maybe I should buy another two for my intake fans? They are completely silent and push loads of air.

But I dont have a side window, its all covered in the soundproof black panels on my P182 :)

And why waste money on a new cooler when have something like a dozen cheapo led fans sitting around doing nothing :p

That looks uglier than if you had just gone for a good air cooler :P

Ok, I listened to your advice and fix'd it with a lovely air cooler ......

I only installed it to test because it looks nice, but it sucks.

4 Ghz @ stock volts, 5 mins of Linx:

Anteck Kuhler H2O 620 - 70 degrees
Intel stock on Q - 87 degrees
Intel stock on P - 81 degrees and VERY LOUD!

..... packaging up my H2O 620 to sell :)

I7 980, Phankeks red cooler, and a 120 Gb adata SSD ...... Thats my crimbo shopping done :p

......

Now no new graphics cards until 2013 or the 28 nm REFRESH!

And the Phanteks cooler is 57 :D :D :D

(What a PITA to install though and my side panel remains slightly dented when shut due to its height).

Oh nice, my side panel no longer has to remain dented when shut - one of my fans wasnt pushed down as far as it would go.

It fits my P182 perfectly now :)

Lol, I use my stool all the time now for motherboard stuffs, nothings broken yet :D

My Gflops just went up to 88 with the new cooler somehow, but it still crashes at around 12-15 mins and temps still reach 95 degrees, though at least they arent going over the TJmax anymore.

So I turned off HT and am using it at 4.5 Ghz with just the 6 cores.

As I said a post above yours - 88 Gflops at 8 Gb / 37k problem size, but crash at 12 mins, likely due to the temps still hitting 95.

So I simply turned HT off, but cant be bothered testing it again. It should be stable with HT off and the reduced temperatures.

I am testing my ram now with the CPU at stock/ HT was left off by accident, but the CPU stays under 48 degrees at stock speed and HT off!

^^ Testing my ram not the CPU remember. I can do 1866 Mhz @ Cas 7!

Ok, seems I have 1866 Mhz ram stable at 186 BCLK, I just needed to increase the QPI voltage to 1.38v :)

Its Geil Ultra series - rated for 2133 Mhz 9-9-9-28.

The ram is allowing up to 186 Bclk at 1866 Mhz now, but the CPU wont get itself stable at 4.6 Ghz+, so its pointless going over 180 Bclk and 4.5 Ghz.

Next up, a new case. It shouldn't be getting that hot. My 990x temps were in the low 80x max using the Phanteks.

No, not happening. Temp differences wont be that great due to the case, I think you must have had a lower voltage chip or used better than stock thermal paste.

My maximum ram frequency:

1894 Mhz @ 7-8-7-24. If I go up to 190 BCLK and 1904 mhz ram, it errors right away in SuperPi :(

Is this pure madness? o.O

Dang!

No that wont be used 24/7 lol. I'll back the CPU down by one multiplier, but I'm gonna do a few benchies at this speed :p

Its no longer running that hot lol. Its back down to 1.4v @ 4.5 Ghz now.

The PC is for 95% gaming, 4% movie making / editing, 1% music recording / editing :p

Why HT off? Surely the whole point of the 980 is for the extra cores and threads.

The HT doesnt do anything but increase temperatures. I'd rather achieve a higher clock speed with it off.

The extra cores are being used in several games I play, but the only thing I have that uses hyperthreading in Civ V, and even then it makes less difference than a higher clock speed.

My point with the new CPU was for the higher clock speed, and extra performance in a few games that can use all 6 cores.

At 1.38v and 4.55 Ghz without HT, the chip maxes out at 83 degrees after 15 minutes of Linx. I dont want it any hotter than that now.
