.

The important thing is to still enjoy yourself and don't stress out too much about your health. Many, many studies have shown that enjoying things like food and drink (*in moderation!) is much better for your well-being than cutting everything out and worrying all the time about your health.

Stress itself is a huge factor in your cardiovascular health.

Take care of yourself, but have fun at the same time ;).

I've just had a big BIG wake up call. On friday night after a hard week of nightshifts i decided to have an online gaming night with 8 cans of Stella for company. About 3 in the morning when the cans had gone i decided i wanted more and ended up drinking 3/4 of a bottle of wine. Then i went to bed.

I woke up on Saturday morning feeling breathless and my heartbeat was all over the place. To cut a long story short i ended up in hostpital , went under anesthetic and they electrocuted me to reset my heart rhythm. The episode was brought on by my alcohol intake. i'm OK now. Clean bill of health from the Doctors. You think you are untouchable but your not. I've been using a gym for the last few years , but no more alcohol for me and i'm changing my lifestyle.. I was supposed to be going on a Stag do to Liverpool next week but i've cancelled. My wife and kids will never have to go through what happened to me last weekend.

Anyway , i can't believe how stupid i was with my alcohol intake. Is there anyone else here who liked a drink and has now stopped for whatever reason? I only ever see my friends when we go out on the drink. My social life and everything else has got to change. I'm glad i've just had a wake call and a second chance, because it could have been so, so worse.

an ounze of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I understand how drinking is a sociable thing, but just stop ****ing your money away and do your liver and stomach a favour. Money saved can go towards a holiday in Barbados.

I've previously suffered from alcohol-induced ecotpic heartbeat/extrasystole. Mine occured when I'd not drunk properly for a few months and then had a big night out (including a fair amount of stress and exercie - I walked about 4 miles at 5am!) and woke up with my heartbeat all over the place. It's a really horrible feeling, and thankfully it calmed down after a couple of days.

I slowed down my alcohol intake for a bit, but drank a fair bit over the recent Christmas and the irregular heartbeat started up again. Never fun, and one of the strangest feelings I've ever had! Congrats on changing your lifestyle!

Wow... must have been pretty scary! I wouldn't have thought 8 cans of Stella and a bottle of wine would be enough to cause anything like that, but hey ho -- glad it's never happened to me considering I'll regularly polish off 1/2 to 2/3 of a bottle of bourbon on a friday night at home!

Worst I have to deal with is a gout onslaught to remind me of what I've done.

I just love booze far too much to change. :D

I don't think i could stomach 8 cans of stella never mind the wine. I suppose it depends how faast you drank.

I think the culture in the UK doesn't help, we assume we should and can drink 10 pints a weekend.

I suffer from arrythmias due to a congenital heart defect. I have had 5 cardioversions so far and will probably end up having more.

Not a nice feeling when the heart starts playing up. Doctors also told me to limit my drinking as it's the main contributor to attacks.

Alcohol was the main contributor to my attack and and that's why i am knocking it on the head. I had to sign a form before my cardioversion. Basically the form said that that there was a 1: 1000 chance that it would make my heart beat worse , 1:10,000 chance of death and <1% of death from the anesthetic. It was scary and I never want to sign a form like that again.

I used to drink a fair bit upto my early twenties but never to excess - I did however stop "getting drunk" by 25 (I'm 34).

I now only drink sparringly and then only a couple - i.e. a cider with a BBQ, a Guinness at a lodge meeting etc. Yearly unit consumption is probably 30 units or thereabouts.

Hasn't affected my social life at all - in fact it's probably improved it as I'm now far more active during the day on a Sunday ;-)

Never a good idea to drink after a night shift. Coffee and nicotine can do the same thing. Its quite a common thing, the heart palpitations, but only a concern if it lasts a long time or your heart is beating more than 150 times a minute.
Glad to hear your ok and making some changes.

Good to have these thread because people are just not aware enough of the consequnces of drinking.

As everyone else is saying just moderate what you're drinking, nothing wrong with a drink now and then just don't over-do it.
