Lake District, trust me on that. But you will need a car. Windermere/Bowness if you like things lively or Keswick if you want a bit more serenity.

Thanks - minor problem, we don't have cars as we live fairly central. I could rent one I suppose - I like the Lake District cottage idea. Any recommendations of decent companies to go with? Plenty on google.

Spend some time looking for private guest houses, they make more of an effort because they rely on repeat trade. They pay a lot to be listed by referral companies, so try and go direct (ie find their awful home made website).
NT has all the prime locations but they are expensive and sometimes a bit more rustic than you expect.

Hire a comfy car, I was averaging 100 miles a day around Penrith in a battered Corsa
