looking at a possible new job but it would involve around 70 miles round trip per day.

how much is this likely to cost?

currently dont have a car so need to know of the cost of a car and running it for that many miles a year is going to be worth the extra money from the new job

a stab in the dark at £2000! not including the car itself, but maintenance of said car :)

lol £2000 to run and maintain a car, including fuel, for 18k a year?!

Don't forget to calculate how much pre-tax salary increase you'd need to break even.

At 40mpg..

£2696 a year in fuel
£300ish a year in tyres
£500 a year servicing and repairs
£160 a year tax

Before you've even bought the car you'd need to be earning an extra £5-6k before tax just to be in the same position you are now...

I'd say around 5-6k p.a. all-in, but obviously part of that will be that you own a car for personal use too, conversely you will be spending time driving where otherwise you were at home.

I do between 70 and 80 miles a day depending which way i go to work.

In my old car averaging 27MPG it was costing me about £4300 in fuel, in my new car averaging about 65mpg its about £1700. But that's 2 services a year with all the associated wear doing that kind of mileage brings.

Id say for a normal car...
Fuel: £2000-£4000 depending what you drive and how you drive it
Servicing: £500 easily just to keep it going day to do
Preventative maintenance: £500 - fixing stuff before it takes your car off the road for a week...
Tyres: £300
Tax: £30-£260 depending on car
Insurance: £200-£1200

In summary: Not cheap

thanks for the replys, looks by the time i purchase an run a car, i will be lucky to break even and thats not taking account of the extra time for the commuting.

I'm not sure I'd do a 70 mile a day commute ever again. I did it for a while and it was horrendous.

Listen to this advice! My current commute is 120 miles a day minimum, and it's a total nightmare, I'm only doing it as it shouldn't be for much more than another year, but having done so for 3 years it's horrible. I'd happy take a pay decrease of around £5k, even if it's only £3k I'd be saving in fuel/car.

One guy a work with commutes 180 miles a day :-S

I still do sometimes, and did for a year ( 200 miles ). It means getting up at silly o'clock just to miss the traffic I'll be hitting, and then still hitting the City traffic. On the way home I just cry as there's nothing to do but sit in traffic for the first 6 miles for a hour. Luckily I've been seconded to Uni for a year and as such can take a train due to work hours, it's 2.5hrs there and 2hrs back but at least I can do work/read/listen to music.

It used to cost me £300 a month to do 70 miles a day in a Mk3 Mondeo 1.8. If it's a pure motorway trip like mine is it's not too bad.. but I wouldn't do it long term. Cruise control + decent stereo makes the time fly.

My 62 miles per day is a piece of cake, average 60mph each way, 30 minutes. I used to do 16 miles before that, and that would take 30 minutes. I think I'm spending 5400 per year on my TDCi Mondeo, 45mpg average, 18k per year, though that's included my DMF/clutch change in that.

70 miles a day is ok if it's clear motorway, but if it's B roads and roundabouts it will be a nightmare.
