1930s Semi Refurb - Part 0 of ... (Edition: Converting and Tidying up an Outbuilding)

I used barrettine on my fence - this stuff - https://www.toolstation.com/barrettine-wood-protective-treatment-5l/p48655

If you're using the same stuff, if you want an even finish, the bare wood needs to be stripped back to a somewhat consistent level before you start, as it doesn't "cover" the wood. Any darker patches will be darker after treating. Hope that helps.

I'd try to get the whole lot sanded back, or blasted, if you want it to look nice.

If you just want to protect it, you can just quickly brush over the whole lot and crack on - this would probably work best with a dark colour.

It's good stuff though and soaks in really well :)

EDIT - It hasn't half gone up in price.. I paid about half the current price couple of years ago!
That's the exact stuff I ordered. Any pics of your fence posts to see how it came out colour wise?

Thanks RE: stripping back. I'll keep it as good as I am willing to get it consistently over the 40m2 lol... ah man... so much effort.

@dLockers

I can take some pics if you would still like some after this, but I'd say the pics in the review by tomscats2 on this ebay auction (scroll down to the bottom of the linked page) are representative of the finished colour. They also highlight what I mean about needing to strip the wood back for a consistent colour - he mentions the bottom two timbers were previously stained already.

Just for clarity, I used it on a new fence, so didn't need to strip anything back except one old post in a corner which wasn't replaced. The post had previously been stained with a creosote type stain many years ago, so it had faded. I just stained over the top and it's all patchy, but it's behind a bush, so I don't care! Where the wood had faded/weathered back to bare wood it's a similar colour to the new wood.

That's great, thanks for finding that for me!

This thing is magic:

About 13 quid IIRC from Amazon. Attached it to a spare broom handle I bought 5 years ago or so. Just "touched" the front door with it and it has gone to the desired condition.

Will now be able to focus the weekend on the detail areas and hopefully blitz the vast majority.

Woop!

The stuff branded as creocote is recycled oil and pfo( processed fuel oil), its far from namby pamby.
God knows what creosote from the old days had in it:eek:
creocote is not`bad`but not as good as proper creosote
We used creosote on out fence last 40 years ago and `most`of it is still solid, creocote is better than b+q water based fence paint but i would still use creosote given a choice :)

Check what type of wood it is (I see shed builders names there) and treat according to the wood.

It may just need feeding and can be easy to spoil by just throwing a well known DIY store name at it.
It's tanalised wood - and I reached out to them basically on day 1 of moving in to see if they'd come and sort it. They basically make agricultural buildings so said they typically don't maintain them. Paint and oil as I pleased!

Anyway I spent 5.5hrs on it today with basically a hand wire brush and a broom stick wire brush. Knackered is an under statement!

ToolStation have let me down a bit as I was expecting the good stuff to have arrived by now. If it hasn't arrived by tomorrow 10am I'll get itchy feet and may try and hit ToolStation in person as I reckon 2 tins may not be enough anyway.

The hard work was really worth it.

Are you feeding it and if so, what oil are you using?

What a difference, looks so much better!

Are you going to do anything with the roof, there seems to be something growing up there :).
Yeah it's the neighbors bush... When we moved in they said just ask and we'll sort it. They're on holiday just now but I'll offer to go round and sort it.

The roof itself is pretty solid although some of the rubber washers on the bolts have perished so I'll try and source some new ones. Long term the roof will probably have to come off as I'm imagining solar running the full length of it.

Thanks, I think so too!

Barrettine which annoyingly still hasn't arrived!

One thing I have noticed that is super daft is that the shed is level with the outside surface, so water just rolls in. Thinking I may need to tackle the whole side return... may re-use my old driveway bricks and have a go at block paving myself...lol.

Slight glitch with the "golden oak" Barrettine... it's made it super dark. Got itchy feet earlier so gave it a quick lick...

I think the plan is to return the second tin (alongside some Dickies trousers that don't fit :o ) and get 2 tins of clear. I'll do the doors and the rear in this darker stuff to continue the theme.
