1998 BMW 318i?

do they use the M42 engine?
if so its still gutless, 118bhp iirc - over 10 secs 0-60.
low model = low spec and wont be the most comfortable over a long distance.

LA420 - they are gutless compared to other cars which are available (silly to compare to an old escort tbh). the 318iS is a different kettle of fish tho

A world apart from the (very good!) e36, my Mum has a silver e46 318i, its as nice to drive as my e38 7 series is!

I really wonder about the things you say sometimes :p

Your mums 318 is as nice to drive as your 7? Yet your 7 is nicer to drive than your Dads 528?

So, logically, your Mums 318 is nicer to drive than your Dads 528i.

Thats not my experience comparing E46 with E39.

My experiences are not ,to me, what yours are to you, obviously.

I'm saying it has nothing wrong with the ride! - It has'nt got stiff suspension & low profile tyres it has a very nice subtle ride, the e38 rides brilliantly, alas, for me, the "Sport" spec models don't ride as well as the non sport models, what you lose in comfort, you gain in roadholding.

I would rather drive the e46 than the e39,which is wallowy by comparison, certainly.

What, and the 7 *isnt*?

They get more 'wallowy' as you get bigger - the 5 is marginally more 'wallowy' than the 3, and the 7 more so than the 5.

Wahaaay this is my kind of thread.

Have to say they arent the quickest thing on the road, but very well balanced and a joy to drive in the twisties.

Sorry about the late reply (work!)

My point is my e38 is a "Sport" spec model, hence firmer suspension & nice fat tyres, my dads e39 isn't. Sure an e39 Sport would be a better handling car than my e38, but back to back, my Dads non sport e39 isn't a patch on my sport equipped e38 in the handling department (imo).

My e38 is more taught than the e46, which itself is more taught than the e39, which is weird, the e46 isn't a sport model in any sence of the word!

I stand by my initial views, in terms of ride quality, the e39 wins (but is wallowy) the e46 is better in terms of "nimbleness" if you get my drift, the e38 is sharper in the handling department, but loses out on ride quality which is harsh compared to the e46 & e39.

My e38 feels better at speed in bends that the other two don't. Then again, I'm used to driving a big heavy truck, so, perhaps, I'm just not happy unless I'm behind the wheel of something (almost!) equally heavy?

As I say mate, my views are not yours, but hey there only my views. You make up your own mind. ;)
