£19k from nowhere

The mistake will be discovered.
Of that happens now or in a years time - banks don't just lose £19k
So you're best bet would be to simpply contact them and let them sort it.
If they insist the money is yours then make sure you get it in writing :)

No the money will not earn the OP any interest.
Once the mistake is noticed, the £19k plus any interest will be removed from the account - not just the original £19k

Oh, and "not doing anything" could, in theory, still be seen as "handling stolen goods".
Unlikey to happen but at the end of the day this mistake will not go un-noticed, so better to get it all sorted out now rather than later.

If you hadn't told them then surely they wouldn't have queried it.

Obviously, you didn't know that someone had paid it in.. but to them it would have just looked like a standard (albeit large) deposit.

Oh well.. at least you did the right thing ;)

go into the bank or ring up and ask where it has come from. likely to be an admin error and will be taken back regardless, so dont spend it.

I personally wouldn't draw there attention or help them in any possible way. My advice would be to leave it there for a couple of weeks, then transfer it into a savings account. If you leave it in your account without transferring it it may get flagged by the bank. Where I worked we scanned bank accounts where there was a substantial amount there and looked into it in more detail.

Dratts just read the whole thread.

Kinda academic now but transferring it to a savings account or whatever is technically the same as withdrawing it, and you'd have a pretty hard time legally explaining actions like that if that kind of money wasn't typically being moved around on the account.

Also, accounts that have an influx of money suddenly that are outside the bounds of its normal patterns typically raise flags on computerised systems - I suspect the bank (systems) would've known about this before you told them.

So, any news on the mysterious deposit?

I would be pretty chuffed if I were you but also concerned that some mafia guys will turn up and ask you for the cash or something :p

I would have thought that they would have made some kind of inquiry at the deposit branch tbh, being as it's 2 fairly big amounts, very odd..

Are you thick as pig ***?, a thug?, an underage single parent? or incapable of getting off your backside to find work?

If so, it's probably a new government scheme and yours to keep :)

If not.......bummer :(

Don't call them, transfer into a savings account or something and just leave it there until they ask for it back, then keep anyinterst
