There aren't any levels where you'll have to use the character map to find the answer.

the shapes themselves extend into a 2nd dimension, but are only shown in 1 dimension. So it's a bit like a 3d game showing on your 2d screen.

Unless the 2nd dimension you mean is in fact time.
