1Ds MkIII on its way

dpreview has been increasingly slow in getting full reviews out, either the 400D or the 40D, I forget which, took months between the release day preview and the full review.

He won't have it yet, not even the reviewers have received samples yet.
I have it.

Not had a lot of time to play yet unfortunately. First impressions compared to 5D.

1 - It's bigger and heavier but handles better because of it. No good on a neck strap though so thinking of getting the Canon E1 hand strap.

2 - It's fast. I mean that in comparison the whole photo cycle seems to take 3 times longer on the 5D.

3 - More reliable AF due to additional points.

4 - It looks fab.

5 - File sizes are huge.

That's it for now. When I've had a real chance to play I'll let you know more.

Nice, I work for a professional landscape photographers and we're looking at getting one so any samples or more information would be welcome.

Side by side with the 5D would be good as that's what we would be upgrading from.

The standard neck strap sucks with all 1D's Optech make a brilliant one which reduces the feeling of the weight of it by about 1/2 and they're much comfier, one of the best things I ever bought for my MKIII.

edit <duh, should have read the above post..> :)

I'll third the Optech recommendation but suggest the E-1 in addition. The nice thing about the Optech is you can remove the main strap loop using the quick release clips if it's getting in the way without having to remove the handstrap.

JPEG saved at quality 12 on our 1DS MK3 is 17.5mb but its dependant on subject matter.

16bit TIFF is 120MB

8bit TIFF is 60MB

It's got 14bit A/D so 16bit is worthwhile.

I'll second the combination of Optech and E1 strap. I have both on my ancient 1D and they make the size of the unit a lot more manageable. Have to say that I looked at a 5D recently, primarily for the improvement in outright image quality. The problem was the handling. In comparison to a 1, the 5 may be lighter, but it's far less balanced and nothing like as comfortable to use. In addition the AF and build quality are so much better on the 1 (even my ancient unit).
So I'm sure the mk3 will be a seriously good piece of kit.
Keep us posted how you get on.

Still no pics yet... love to see a full size pic of something with lots of colour and shade to see how it handles it.
