hi there looking for a car that will last about a year or longer if poss obv lol, budget is 1k to do a 5hour trip every other weekend. any advice was looking at mondeos or passats but really dont know. if someone has knowledge and can point me in the right direction it will be greatly appreciated

Mk1 Focus are one of the most reliable used cars at that budget. 1k should get u a 2003/4 with around 80k on. The petrol Zetec engines are reliable and there cheap to run and maintain. You will get a better example Focus than the Mondeo or Passat for 1k

No go on Autotrader and eBay motors and enter your postcode and whatever distance you want to travel there will be loads of focus's. U will easily get one with 12 months Mot and service history for 1k
Post the links of any u find on here so people can let u know If it looks worth the money etc.

Finding a £1k car with a 10month+ ticket should be no issue - I wouldn't buy one with less

There are loads of focus, Mondeo etc examples to chose from. An mot is indeed £30, so I'd expect that to have been spent to sell it

I'd go as far as to say I'd be far less suspicious of a £5k car with say 7 months left

the bigger non turbo vag group and ford engines of yesteryear will run for moon miles if you keep oil in them so dont worry about mileage.

get something with plenty of MOT and use that time to save money for either a new car or repairs when it comes to MOT time. if it passes then profit

been doing this 'bangernomics' as my second car for ages

had a £230 mk3 golf years ago that did 2 years of commuting work , did need a bit of duct tape and a wheel bearing adjustment and exhaust 'bandage' for the 1 MOT i put it through

i was doing 1000 miles a month in a £210 audi 80 estate last year. auto owned by an old woman whod probably never had it over 4k rpm

done london and back a few times in the last month in a £480 bora. air con and cruise !

the audi and golf got scrapped for pretty much half their buy cost . they both never cost me anything in repairs. maybe a few exhaust rubbers and bulbs. few oil top ups or changes.

+1 for a Focus. My current daily is a Puma though and it's been thoroughly decent at £250 but it's an S reg. 24k miles in last 12 months

I got a £1k Passat TDI (2003 with 140k on it) a couple years ago for my 100 mile daily round trip to work. Kept it for a year, then gave it to my mum. She has since put some miles on it too, and barring servicing and brake pipes, hasn't needed a penny spent, and returned 50 mpg.

Was in it at the weekend, and realised I did actually miss it too. Cracking car for the money, good economy, and cheap-ish tax. 5 hour trips every other weekend sounds like a decent amount of miles to be doing. I would be going diesel with that in mind, although obviously everyone else on here will tell you to go petrol because of a £250 DMF that magically turns into a £800 bill apparently.

I picked up a 1995 318is auto for £430 a couple of months ago as a moving house/temporary vehicle after handing back my XF. It's standing up well, and had 9 months MOT at the time of purchase :)
Needed a fan coupling and a damn good clean inside, but it's doing the daily commute is currently my main vehicle. I thought I would really miss all the mod-cons in my XF, but it's surprisingly fun to drive, and even the lack of air-con has not been a major issue ove the lalst few weeks?!

I am certainly not saying such a car is a good idea, but just that there are other options out there, and cheaper :D Bangernomics!

You can definitely do better than that. The Lx is pretty spartan and you'll be able to pick up a car a few years newer.

I'd work on the assumption any car at this kind of age with no / incomplete history has been clocked (to avoid worry/disappointment) - just buy it on condition
