Alfa 156 V6.
At this money if something major goes it will be throw away, but I bought mine for £600 two years back and it is still strong.
A must would be to get one owned by an enthusiast. Mpg is poor but the V6 is lovely, a real gem and they have a 6 speed box.
Not everyone's taste but they are out there. Tonnes of s/h spares available as well so most jobs other than engine and gearbox can be done for peanuts.

I bought an old XJ Sport 4.0 for £500 last year, it was great fun and durable. Ace engines. Not exactly a sporting experience mind but very enjoyable.
