Hey folks

Ex Console gamer here, i've seen the light! but i don't know how to cross the muddy field of CPU's, GPU's and Graphic cards...etc

Basically, i'm a little bit of a Noob when it comes to custom Rigs. I usually buy off the shelf.

I'm looking at ordering a Custom rig off of OC and getting them to, hopefully, build it for me, i've looked at a fair few components, but looking through this forum I’ve found that you guys know your stuff.

So I’m wondering what you would build with £1000??

I need this computer for Gaming and occasional Video & Photo editing.

I also need the OS incorporating into the price.

I don't need any peripherals.

Bonus question - I’ve put aside a separate £150 for a monitor, is there anything you'd recommend for that?

Thanks in advance for your help, its much appreciated! Hopefully with this new rig i can step firmly away from the jaws of the console wars.

If you are only doing occasional video and photo editing then an i5 will be fine.

The Powercolor R9 290 is supposed to come with 8GB Free ram, so I would check that the offer is still valid. If it is then drop the kingston ram from the basket.

The Asus board has £30 cashback as well (Bundle Number 55) - https://toptechcashback.com/uk/en/pages/cashback/qualifying

That will bring you back towards your budget, although you would still have ocuk's fee for building the pc, which is around £60 I think.

You can post any of the baskets in the customer services (pre-sales) section and ask them for a quote.

my sig has some builds in it, ps i strongly reccomend getting the I5 instead of the I7 if photo/video editing is only occasional, in games you literally wont notice a difference, I5 is more power than many have, in other words: listen to Lee

note don't buy EVERYTHING on his list if the GPU still comes with RAM as he's also included some ram separately in the list, i think he already warned you but i wanted to be extra sure as i understand this can all be very confusing for a beginner

seriously I dont get you people.

You have a very strange logic...

you say you "wont notice the difference" between an i5 and i7 and yet you over spend on a monitor that is hardly going to matter at all... and overspending on a case that does pretty much what you can get for £20 - £30...

you people say you wont notice the difference to rationalise ridiculous expenditure on things you dont need and not enough elsewhere...

very strange to me...

seriously at least I know the difference an i7 is over i5. I am a systems tech "guy" and I experience 1st hand video/photo/rendering...

and really you do not need a 290 - a 770/280x is max for 1080p

seriously what id personnaly spec is actually under 1k...more like 800 tops full system
end of rant;

I personally wouldn't stick a £1000 build in a £20-£30 case. They are usually cramped with poor stock fans at that price range. I would rather spend a bit more on a decent case that has good airflow. The Ronin is a great case for the money.

The op stated that he was gaming with occasional video editing. I wouldn't spec a R9 290 for someone who was doing occasional gaming for example. The i5 is perfectly capable for occasional video editing/rendering. I know that the i7 will be faster, but in this instance I think the money is better spent elsewhere.

You realise that the monitor is a 144Hz right ? In other words a faster graphics card is actually useful in this situation. If it was a bog standard 60Hz monitor then a 280X would be fine.

lol i should show you a pic my pc i built 4/5 years ago
i7 870 oc 3.6
8GB ram
3 drives
h80i (only 3 months old)
GTX 460 (waiting for new tech)
2x 120mm fans
CX600

cost ~ 1000 over time size of case ~ 40 x 40 x 20 cost ~ 30

better spent is an opinion in this case because id rather spend on the guts of a computer than a box...

20-30 case does not mean it is cramped...anything that is normally fitted in a 1 GFX system does not need more than that...

which btw the case Ive specd is actually very roomy...

lower price does not mean worse. infact it is all psychological. Being more expensive makes you think its better but it really isnt...why do think "brands" make you pay more - to manipulate you to think its worth more

I love the fact that you say a R9 290 is overkill for 1080P and then you go and spec a R9 290X with a 60Hz Monitor.

You also specced a 750W psu, which is pointless for a single gpu setup. The 650W psu in my spec gives a bit of headroom for overclocking etc. You could quite easily get away with a 550W.

Of course any decent 'Tech guy' would know that ;)

So why didn't you spec an £800 pc then ? Nobody forced you to spec a £1100 pc.

You had a dig at my spec for being 'meh' but then you go and spec an overpriced gpu and an overpowered psu.

Your words were " and really you do not need a 290 - a 770/280x is max for 1080p" but then you go and spec a 290X anyway lol

I don't quite understand your logic either.

pot....kettle.....

@ OP: if your main focus is gaming, and you're not editing masses of video, and that's how much you have/want to spend on your rig, then my opinion is that Lee's build will give you better gaming performance, and acceptable video editing power.
depending on the amount of video work you do, it might be worth upping it to an i7, but there's nothing to stop you doing this later.

I would however spend the extra £15 on the PSU and get the leadex....just cos it's prettier :P but also, you have the extra 100w if you need it, and fully modular will make the build so much cleaner looking.

The Leadex are nice psu's. It's a shame EVGA don't do a lower wattage version of the G2 though.

Relax, none of these builds are objectively "better" than others, just different ways of spending the money.

I've bought placky £30 cases and much sturdier £60 cases, and prefer the latter. Maybe £25 gets you a perfectly good case these days, or maybe you just don't mind putting several hundred quid of electronics in a flimsy case, it's personal preference.

Also I've used <£200 monitors and >£400 monitors with the same screen size, and the more expensive ones are obviously better. Better colours, less ghosting, better build quality, looks, accessories... But is it worth it? Personal preference. I believe so, you may not.

No need to get your knickers in a twist ;)

Wow some really awesome advice on here, thanks people! All of it has been a massive help.

So that being said here’s my current basket:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-04-40G) £319.99
1 x Asus Z97-K - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£14 Saving** £245.58
1 x Corsair Carbide 540 High Airflow ATX Cube Case - Black (CC-9011030-WW) £98.95
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £79.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
1 x Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Gold (HX21C11BGK2/8-OC) £67.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £65.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** HDD £41.98
1 x Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm £19.99
1 x Pioneer 24x Internal DVR-221LBK DVD Rewriter - OEM £13.49
Total : £1,043.94 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Kinda fallen in love with that Corsair case, it’s a bit weird. As a heads up for all, the Powercolor Radeon R9 290 no longer comes with the free RAM. So I opted for the Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X as it's on offer this week & the HyperX 8gb Ram.

With the £30 Cash back with the Z97-K (Big up to Lee32uk) that will bring me back to my 1k budget. OC have quoted me around £60 to get this sucker built.

What do you guys think?

Once again, massive high five to all of you for the help.
