i have not had a phone contract in about ten years so not really sure what the norm is.

i started a new 2 year, £29 a month contract with ee on the on the 30th of July. i receive a text today saying my 1st bill is due on 10th of august for the £29

is it normal to be charged the full amount for half a month of service?

Voda and O2 both charged me for 1 month (the 2nd month) + partial month (1st month) for the first bill rather than charging a whole month for the partial month.

You should have actually been charged circa £41 as they charge for the month in advance plus the pro-rata month in arrears i.e.

11th Aug - 10th Sept = £29
30th July - 10th Aug = 12 days = (£29/31)*12 = £11.23 (or thereabouts

Total bill = 29+11.23 = £40.23

EE actually just generate bills from the date you join. So you always pay full months.

The bill is "due" on 10th August because Direct Debit is always taken a bit afterwards. The bill date will be 30th July.

Three charge 1 month + ~20 days in the first bill and the bill date becomes whatever that falls at.

Vodafone pro rata until the start of the month and the take 1 month in advance.

Don't know about o2.

where on earth did you pull that from?

AFAIK EE work the same as T-Mobile and, when I worked there, the billing was setup as:

Billing Cycle = day x (change x as any date in the month)
Payment Date = day x + 14 days.
The Line Rental is paid a month in advance with the chargeable calls, text etc paid in arrears.

When you started a contract, your first bill included the month in advance PLUS the days of line rental you now have in arrears since taking out the contract until your billing date.

I have no idea about voda but after a decade at orange and being on the lead project when they merged I learnt a few things myself ;)

I can show you multiple first bills for T-Mobile and EE from the past 24 months if you want.

The first bill has been exactly 1 month's worth unless it is a second line attached to an existing account.

It is also exactly what is happening for the OP.
