1st Gen Corsair HX850 still usable?

Hmm.. really one the fence now. It don't want to spend 150 quid needlessly.

Although if I get a RTX 4000 series I'll need to solve the 16 pin cable problem.

I believe it is more suitable for modern systems than the S12/M12, but I'd still question if it is sensible to spend £1K-2K+ and use a 15 year old PSU. That said, your risk appetite may be different.

How high-end are you going? You can get 4070/4070 Ti's with 8 pins and the other cards usually come with adapters.

One thing I would say is that Ampere and Ada GPUs are known to have short but quite intense current spikes which can expose weaknesses in PSUs which have seen better days - that PSU would probably be fine for a few years yet for anything sub about 300 watt GPU wise but 4080 upwards I'd seriously consider a newer PSU erring on the safe side. The chances of it taking out the GPU is pretty low though.

Don't really know what the situation is in that respect with the AMD 7000 series.

EDIT: Weirdly enough my 3070 doesn't seem to be exhibiting it as much lately - dunno whether newer drivers mitigate it or something else.

Though I still recommend somewhat over-speccing the PSU, depending a bit on its optimal efficiency curve, to allow for ageing and improved thermal/noise situation and so on.

Yup, that's fair enough.

I bought this 850w PSU as I originally run a pair of Radeon HD6950's in crossfire.

Right now it's running an AMD 5800x CPU with a Nvidia 3070 so will be way over spec.

I would still probably push it to "near" capacity though I'm the future if I bought a beefier GPU etc, to be honest I can see myself using this at least, another 5 years.

I have an old Corsair Hx850 that I bought around 2011-2012, recently moved it from a Sandybridge 1155 setup to an X99 setup with a 3090 GPU, no problems at all, runs perfectly.
To be honest I did not even think about not using it until I read this topic, now I am wobbling !

Lol, sorry. I played it safe in the end and got a new ATX 3.0 Be Quiet 1000w.

Might be worth doing that anyway?

Could be, I generally try to delay swapping out PSU's as I always seem to struggle with removing the 24 pin ATX connector.
The board often seems to be flexing and the 24 pint ATX connector never seems to want to play ball so I get a bit nervous about damaging the board.

I am not sure if ths is due to specific PSU's. I had a Kolink 1200W PSU that nearly needed a kango to get the 24 pin ATX disconnected, others such as EVGA and Corsair seem to be better in this respect but not perfect.
